Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would very much appreciate any ideas of what we can do to help my 15 year old son with his acne. He has been treated by a dermatologist for 3 years now, and is currently on his 3rd month of using Accutane. He has severe acne on his face and back and arms. Nothing helps! He is also taking supplements to support his liver, and uses skin products from Poland from a Polish facialist.
Does anyone have experience with a "cure"?
He definitely gets this from his genes; so we know very well how difficult this is for him.
Any leads would help; we feel so helpless now!
Thanks,
Mary A. in San Antonio

I have a terrible acne outbreak-adult acne that just started out of the blue with this last pregnancy. Nothing has helped, except now I'm trying a new regimen from Acne.org. It seems kinder to my skin. I use a 5% benzoyl peroxide instead of their recommended 2.5% (only because I already had it and acne gets expensive!) . Check it out and see what you think. I have had major inmprovements with this regimen. Mine was the scarring type as well. I never knew you could get through your teen years without acne, only to have scarring acne as an adult. I feel so much for your son. My sister and husband had the same experience as teenagers. Tell him never to touch his face. Try Acne.org.

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your concern for my son. He has tried every product doctors can prescribe, and now he's on the "big guns". This med. works for nearly all cases, but today the dr. said his case is difficult. Hopefully, the Accutane will eventually work. I was just wondering if anyone has been through a similar experience and had success somehow.

I have suffered with acne for what seems like all of my life. I stumbled upon Proactiv two years ago and it has been an answer to prayer. I rarely ever have a breakout anymore. It's amazing to me to be able to go without make-up and have confidence in my skin. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about it, but I will say that I would have been so thankful to have had this product as a teen. (Sorry to make such a plug on the boards, but I've used this long enough and it really, really works.)

My husband and sister both had accutane and it worked for my husband, but came back for my sister. Hope he does well on it.

Hello!

I suffered with cystic acne for years, and it is a real pain (quite literally!), both emotionally and physically. I worked for many years for Clinique, Mary Kay and Avon, and have gleaned some tips through the years that have worked for me. One tip to test out - don't let your ds drink ANY carbonated beverages, period, whether diet, regular, Coke, orange, Dr. Pepper, anything. I found that even one or two of them made my acne much, much worse. Try encouraging him to drink lots of water instead, with a non-carbonated drink tossed in from time to time, such as iced tea, juice, etc. I know soda is really popular with this age group, but if his skin improves without it, it will be well worth it for him. Also be sure that he washes his face after exercise (something teens sometimes forget). A good, cleansing facial mud mask (even though he is a guy!), done a couple of times a week is also very helpful. One brand name of products to try would be Clinique's products for problem skin. You can view them online at www.clinique.com , and even purchase online if travel is a problem. Dove soap is also an excellent, gentle yet thorough facial skin cleanser that you can easily pair with other, "harsher" topical skin products, such as astringents, creams, etc. Don't let the "mildness" of Dove fool you - it will effectively cleanse the skin and prevent the stronger products from irritating his skin, which, by the way, will make his skin appear worse. I would stick with the bar version of Dove, NOT the facial cleansers in a tube.

Hope these suggestions help him out!

God bless!

Jenny
