Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest daughter started her cycles a few months ago. We handled it fine, , but I have some questions. (It having been some 27 years since I was in her shoes.)

First, her periods are lasting at least seven days. That seems pretty long to me. Are the first few supposed to be heavier and longer?

Second, she complains about having almost constant, and copious, mucous when she is not having her period. It doesn't seem limited to a few days mid-cycle. I need to have her start making notes so we can really see what is going on. I am just wondering if this is normal. I can't remember ever being aware of mucous before I started having kids and learning NFP. Maybe I was just oblivious.

I really wouldn't want to take her in to a GYN doctor at her age (almost12), but I am not really sure what is normal and what to be worried about. I was hoping those of you who have been through this with a daughter( or two or five) could help me out.

Thanks!

Often young girls don't ovulate for the first cycles (maybe a few, maybe a couple of years), or at least not for all of those early cycles. That would definitely affect the mucus pattern. Also, without the ovulation, the hormones that regulate the flow aren't working the same way they do when there is ovulation, and that can lead to prolonged flow. Various of my dds have had *goofy* periods for a little while before things settled down. I think it's pretty normal for young girls.

Peace,
Nancy

I've only had two periods since first getting pregnant but prior to that I had long, heavy periods with bad cramping and lots of mucous. (My two periods after pregnancy were light, cramp-free, and my mucous pattern has slowly become more normal). I think this is very common, though not necessarily "normal." You might look into nutrition but I wouldn't stress too much unless she is really being bothered by it. Maybe in a year or two when she seems to be more regular you can explore things with more serious charting.

Most likely she's fine.Just in case, you might get her thyroid checked.A heavy/long period is sometime caused by a low thyroid hormone. It's an easy test and any doctor can order it.

From the beginning of mine, they have always lasted 7 days (sometimes 8 ) and I have always had lots of mucous all through my cycle. I always had to wear panty liners to school...

Same here. I would guess it's nothing to worry about. If you're hesitant to bring her to a gynecologist but still worried, perhaps you could ask her pediatrician about it? I know a pediatrician can usually deal with these kinds of issues in a preteen.

Thanks ladies! I just wanted to double check. I didn't really know what to say when she brought it up, again.

My cycles were always really long and irregular when I was a teenager with lots of mucous, too. I always had really hormonal times (really depressive moments). I don't think they really straightened out until after college.

I do remember reading that your cervical mucous can be tied into other mucous your body produces. For instance, anti-histamines can dry everything up, and de-congestants can increase the mucous everywhere.

You could always have her try a little bit of charting just to get a better idea of how her body works; you don't have to get into the rules of NFP. I really plan to do this once my girls hit that time. I think it really would have made me feel less insecure about the whole process if I understood what MY body was doing.
