Any tips on making this bearable on my poor family? I just did half a cup of coffee b/c my head was pounding and my children were begging! I have had 1-3 cups of coffee a day for the past 10 years. Other sources of caffine have been very minimal, coffee is the biggie. I'm working hard on strengthing my immune system and I know this is a biggie. Can anyone help me?!?!

Dear Lisa,
Congratulations on trying this. Be patient, and go slowly. My best friend was told to cut down like this: decrease your amount of caffeinated beverages by 1/4 cup per day. No more than that. By slowly decreasing, the bad side effects should be lessened.
Eventually you'll be down to 1/4 c. per day. At that point, reduce by tablespoon per day, maybe, until you can just stop it?
Also, you may try giving yourself another good thing to drink in its place, or a small special but healthy snack to go with your water.
Keep up the good work, just be gentle with yourself, as gentle as you'd be with your baby if he had to be weaned suddenly.
(I like water with fresh squeezed lemon juice.)

I switched from coffee to green tea in August. Granted, green tea still has caffeine, but I do believe it's better for you. Also, I was drinking 6 (I can't believe I drank that much!) cups of half decaf coffee every morning. When I switched to green tea, I could only drink one. I eventually got to the point where I didn't even crave or want the green tea. I've given up caffeine for lent several times before. The key for me was to drink lots and lots of water. Since August, I've been drinking 2 liters of water each day. I'm usually done with my 2 liter bottle by 3:30pm, so I am really drinking more than that. I find the more water I drink, the more I crave. Long answer to a short question! One more thing: another benefit I gained from cutting coffee and doing the water thing was that I dropped 10 pounds almost effortlessly. I noticed when drinking coffee that I'd suddenly hit a point of being really hungry and then I'd eat anything in sight. Usually, I didn't eat good things! Overall, I feel much better now. I do still allow myself the occaisional cup of coffee as a treat.

The last time I gave up caffiene.. it was the source of my headaches.. made it pretty easy.
A time before that.. I'd gotten in the habit of drinking cola (I worked at a fast food place and we could have sodas) and well my bio-dad was alcoholic so I was less than pleased that I'd allowed myself to feel dependant on the caffiene.. especially since I got nothing out of it.. never helped me be more alert or kept me awake or anything...
I stopped. Drank water.. when I wanted something sweet I'd have a sprite or orange soda, and I'd have about 4-6 oz of cola if I was getting a headache.. and only then. I got through it pretty fast.. but I may not have really been having all that much.. just enough to give me a headache by stopping.

Lisa,
I was just thinking this morning that I really need to cut back on caffeine. I'm drinking 2-4 cups a day and I don't think it's doing anything great for my sanity. We're hoping to be pregnant again soon, too, and I don't like to have so much caffeine while pregnant. I think I'll try the 1/4 less a day method and I'll remember you with a short prayer when I have my coffee!

Lisa I had to quit coffee (all caffiene) 6 wks ago. I did it cold turkey, actually I have had zero sugar or caffiene. It was really only hard for maybe 3 days. Of course I only quit because I am pregnant and had no choice, but I do know that you can do this. Hang in there, once your past 72 hrs you are home free.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement all! I'm doing good on 1/2 a cup a day for the past 3 days, just to take the edge off of the horrible headache I get if I don't have it. I also upped my water intake even more I'm sure that's helping!

If you find it difficult to consume more water, try popping a flavored herbal tea bag into a glass of water or water bottle and keep refilling throughout the day. A single tea bag will add flavor through numerous water refills. The flavor is quite refreshing and much less expensive than flavored waters. Any kind of mint and apple cinnamon spice are two favorites!
