My husband has been diagnosed with high cholestrol levels. We would like to avoid using medecine, if possible. Can anyone recommend a good cookbook that contains recipes to help lower cholestrol?

Any other advice would be appreciated, too.

My uncle swears by sprinkling flax seed on your cereal in the morning and drinking a glass of red wine every night.

My husband takes red yeast rice for high cholesterol. His had been really high, but he didn't want to take meds for it. Our doctor suggested he give this a try. You can find it in health food stores. It worked very, very well for him.

If he's not opposed to going vegan, that's what I would recommend.

also from nutritional healing:

apple pectin, calcium aspartate, chromium picolinate

lots of apples, bananas, carrots, dried beans, garlic, grapefruit, olive oil.

Omega 3 fish oil is very helpful.
Another thing I was told by my dr. was that studies showed that taking Metamucil 3X a day was more effective than doubling the dose of statins (most commonly prescribed drugs) in reducing cholesterol.

Thank you for the recommendations. I am adding foods, etc. to my husband's diet and eliminating certain other foods. I really appreciate the advice.

you might appreciate reading the CHINA study by Thomas Campbell. He recommends a nearly vegan diet and it's very convincing! We are in the change right now to almost vegan...

My sister-in-law lowered her cholesterol about 60 points by walking 1 hour daily, last summer. She didn't do much as far as diet. She did say she decreased her consumption of pumpkin praline ice cream.

Marcia, thank you for recommending the CHINA study. My husband's sister is a vegan and has mentioned a little bit about this study before.

Ice cream is one of the foods that we are eliminating. Someone in our house ate it almost every night this summer (it wasn't me).

I have heard that taking one tsp of cinnamon a day is supposed to help. You can either sprinkle it over your food or take it in capsule form.

Lots of beans (black-eyed peas too) because they help lower cholesterols... and oatmeal.

ETA my DH needed to lower his BP and objected completely to the vegan diet, so I went slightly different. We ate meat less frequently, and when we did eat it, it was lean. We eat red meat much more rarely now. I increased his veggie consumption, which for DH was a case of more beans (the only kinds he will eat other than beans are corn and potatoes ), and I switched to whole grains.

Christine,

I recommend reading Dr. Joel Furhman's book Eat to Live.

It is basically a vegan diet. He also has a web site with lots of info and reciepes.

I have stuggled for years with this problem(at one time my cholesterol over 300!), after following his advise last Jan. my numbers dropped from 233 to 150 in just 6 weeks!

I have changed the way my whole family is eating, hoping that my children can avoid this problem in the future. They have adapted well--some with less tears than others .

My 14 yr old daughter just wrote a speech on healthy eating, based on Dr. Furhman's advise and came in first place in our state for her age group. She is totally on board.

I thank God Dr. Furhman--he has helped change our lives for the better.

My dh and a couple friends of ours has taken this and it has helped tremendously.

I guess I am in the opposite camp from the vegans, but I suggest the books Real Food by Nina Planck and Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. You might also read some at www.westonaprice.org http://www.westonaprice.org/moderndiseases/benefits_cholest. html

I followed the "8 week cholesterol cure". Lowered my cholesterol 70 points. Remember everything you do that is cholesterol lowering is cumulative. If you eat oats you can lower your cholesterol a few points, add some exercise and lower it some more, cut saturated fat and it can go down even more, etc.

Good luck, Valerie
