I did a home CD relaxation course for my last baby and found it helpful. Five weeks to go to the next baby and I feel like I need a pep talk. Any one have any good experiences to share?

I read a hypnobirthing book before my last delivery (didn't have the tapes) and I really think it helped! I used that and some accupressure techniques. I will admit, I did eventually go for an epidural (long story why) but it only worked on one side anyway - so the techniques still came in handy!  I'm sure someone who actually used the tapes and practiced the ideas long term would be an even better success story - but my half-hearted attempts were still helpful, and I am going to use them again this time along with techniques in a book I just read, "Back Labor No More." (I've had back labor in 3 out of my 4 labors  ).
I'm interested to see others' responses too!  God bless you on your wait until the "big day"!

Hi,
I took hypnobirthing classes with my last pregnancy (I don't usually tell people, 'cuz they look at me funny  ). But they had showed a tape at one of the hospital classes and it looked like such a calm, relaxing exeperience for these people! My labor/delivery before that with my second child had been longer and much more intense than my first one, and I was a little more nervous....
I would have to say they were VERY helpful. When I got the urge to push, I turned to dh and said, "how can I already be here, I've only been doing the breathing/visulaizations etc for like 20 minutes?" He responded, "It has been more like 2 hours..." Time flew for me, and it wasn't bad at all, I was standing until right up when I actually had to push...
dd was 9.8lbs, and I had no pain meds...
I would definitly say it worked and was helpful for me.

I have used hypnobirthing for two of my deliveries and it was wonderful!
The first was Emily and the doctor was a hypnotherapist as well as a OB. He had me visualize the contractions as riding a bicycle uphill to the peak and then downhill. I was still doing the slow deep breathing at 9 CM with no pain meds of any kind. I also went from 4 - 9 cm in 7 minutes and delivery in 10. I am 100% convinced it was due to being so relaxed.
With the next two I used the methods on my own but it wasn't quite the same. I think it was the doctor who was there, mine was out of town and the on call was not as friendly as my doctor. It was probably the stress of my doc not being there that was interfering.
Sam was born 9 years later. I still used no meds but I didn't know there were "courses" available so I just tried to remember the relaxation from all those years earlier. Not nearly as effective but I relished the fact that I endured the pain on my own, if that makes sense.
In 2005 I found Hypnobabies. It is wonderful. I highly recommend it. It is a workbook and a set of CD's that help you prepare for the birth. They have extra CD's or scripts so you can record your own for helping to stop pre-term labor or for helping labor to begin if you are getting past your due date and many others. They have a support list, email groups, etc. They also have "live" classes in different places throughout the year, most are in CA but they do have them in other places. I think they have a list on the website but I haven't been in two years.

I am a longtime lurker who has never posted (I suppose I'm shy ), but I thought I would respond. I am pregnant with child #2 (due in October), and I decided to invest in the Hypnobabies home-study course for this birth. My first was born completely naturally and very quickly, but it was a very painful and intense experience. I really was hoping there was a better way to go natural.
I have been very impressed with the course and the materials and I am feeling very confident that it is going to work. If you are not aware of it, there is a hypnobirthing yahoo group that you can join. Women frequently post their hypnobirthing success stories. I find them very inspiring as I prepare for my birth. You may want to check it out if you need a little psychological boost.

From what I've figured out talking to people.. if something will work you need to know if it helps you to think of other things or if it helps you to focus inward on what your body is doing.. for me the Bradley Method with the inward focus works exceptionally well. I think it was Lamaze? that had a more outward focus.. I'm not sure where hypnobirthing falls.. but from those I've talked to.. if you're inclined to one way.. the other way won't work that well at all.

A book called, Childbirth Without Fear changed by perspective on birthing and made them far more bearable. I highly recommend the book. Capers bookshop in Australia sell it.
It concentrates on total relaxation throughout labor and trying to keep all the muscles of the body relaxed. It helps in the conservation of energy between contractions and stops the 'fighting' of dilating of the cervix. The cervix being a muscle also tightens when you tense other muscles in the body particularly the mouth.
It also points out the 'emotional pillars' that most women face in labour at different stages - the emotions at transition are probably the most well known 'pillar' but I found it very enlightening to have it pointed out that when I say, "I've had enough and I cannot take it any more!" it means birth is very imminent and there is a real physical reason for it that the book explains.
I shocked myself when I said those words 5 mins into second stage last time (I usually have 1/2 hour of second stage, and I'm thinking, "Anne, you've only just started 2nd stage, you've got to keep going for a while yet!!") but then my baby arrived 7 mins later and it explained it all...
I think to understand all these natural 'dynamics' help in feeling you are in control, which is always an important factor in giving birth.

The founder of Hypnobirthing appearantly based her theories and practice on the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, who wrote the book Anne mentioned, Childbirth Without Fear. I hadn't realized that before. I definitely used that type of very inner centered and focused relaxation and breathing techniques. My mother had read and used Childbirth Without Fear and Vellay's Childbirth Without Pain in the 60s. That definitely influenced me and had great natural birth experiences using this type of technique.
