A few of my kids suffer from frequent leg cramps. They usually occur at night and are sometimes quite severe.
Any ideas what causes this? Are they missing a key vitamin or mineral? Also, what remedies should I use? I rub their legs and sometimes use a heating pad, but that doesn't always work, and in the middle of the night, quick relief is important!
Thanks!

My mom has horrible leg cramps. There are a few things she uses that work.
A new remedy she just found out about is mustard. Just regular, yellow mustard. Do a google search, and it comes up. Surprising, but it seems to work.
Also - there is a product called A-B Calm(I don't know if this is a good price, but it is a picture of the product. It is a calcium/magnesium supplement, and it says "prevents leg cramps" right on the label.) She has used this too.
Another item I know of is Hyland's Leg Cramps remedy. It is a homeopathic remedy.

So she rubs yellow mustard on her leg? Sounds pretty messy! We certainly have plenty of yellow mustard around here.
Thanks!

When I worked with my college basketball team, the team trainer would give potassium supplements to the players who had cramps. Bananas have a lot of potassium.

Mangoes have lots of potassium too!
How about banana-mango smoothies for breakfast? Yum!

A lack of calcium or potassium or magnesium are all causes of leg cramps. Potassium and calcium are the biggest contributors-you know you kid's diets so you can adjust accordingly but stretching also really, really helps. Just make sure they're 30 seconds at a time-not 10 or 15 seconds like most people suggest to get a thorough muscle stretch. I know how frustrating those leg cramps are! Especially after long hot days of extra activity-I've played a lot of sports in my lifetime and know the consequences of inadequate diet and hydration. I hope that helps and good luck!

Well, I had to ask! My kids actually eat a lot of yellow mustard! Sandwiches, hot dogs, pretzels. We buy the gallon tub from Costco.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. Thanks to everyone else, too. I think the AB Calm would help with a lot of issues around here.
