Two of my dc have swimmers ear. Could someone share their knowledge of how often to put in the drying drops or Similisan or if I should use antibiotic drops. Dh had this problem and has more than a full bottle left. I'm not sure how long it takes to clear up and when I should go to the dr. I am giving pulsatilla..started last night. Crushed ibuprofen for dd10 for sleeping..she has never been able to take suspension liquid.
It starts getting better, I leave it alone, then its worse by night fall.
My common sense seems to be on vacation help.

Tammy,
My 9 yo dd got a bad case of swimmers ear in May that became very dangerous. Here are a few things I learned:
--watch for any fever - go to doctor or at least call if it starts
-- watch the ear, is the area behind the ear (on the head) red at all? Compare the two ears, is the hurt ear poking forward at all -- Call DR. immediately w/redness or poking because it could indicate the infection has gone into the bone (This is what happened with my dd and they almost put her in the hospital on IV.)
-- Has the ear canal swollen shut so that the drops have no where to go? Go to DR, they will put in a wick.
I don't mean to sound scary, but I never knew swimmers ear could be dangerous and if it hadn't been for the fact I needed them to insert a wick and the DR. noticed the infection, my dd would have been in very serious condition. I hope your dd gets better soon!

Thanks Marjorie..none of those symptoms...just painful to touch and pain on and off.
Do you know how often to use the drying (alcohol) drops?

I haven't gotten over my fear of those alcohol drops. Years ago a friend of my sisters kept complaining about the water in his ear, that it was hurting, and such. So she put the drops in and it hurt him, really, really badly. Turns out he had a bad ear infection and the alcohol was not a good thing.
Now I get so nervous trying...how do I know the difference!?

I have never used the drying drops. I would either call my ped. office and ask a nurse for guidance or my local pharmacist. You may need antibiotic versus drying drops. I think the drying drops are used to prevent swimmers ear. Once it starts antibiotic drops may be necessary. I always err on the side of caution, wimpy me :-)

As far as I know, you're supposed to use the alcohol drops to prevent only.
I've had it a couple of times, and that's what my mom did afterwards to keep it from recurring...

A 50/50 mixture of distilled vinegar and alcohol can be used. The vinegar is antibacterial; the alcohol is drying. Both are best for preventative or at the initial onset of swimmers ear.

I've had success with healing swimmers ear using the 50/50 mixture that Jennifer recommended. I think I used a few drops in each ear twice a day. I googled the recipe a few years ago and found plenty of info on the web, so you could do a search to find out how much to put in each ear.
