I usually have significant hair shedding at two points - postpartum and then after I stop nursing (usually 18 months). Does anyone have any good shampoos that they recommend for postpartum - I prefer natural to chemical ones generally? I do not like to take the Hair vitamins (high dose Biotin and other Bs) when I am nursing - not sure if it is ok or not with prenatals. Or any other ways you minimize hair loss?
I am planning on going to get my hair cut shoulder length today - I know that less braiding and tying back helps with strengthening the hair.

One theory that I've heard about post-natal hair loss is that during your pregnancy you lose very little b/c your body is trying to devote all the nutrients it can to your baby. So once you have the baby there you go with loosing your hair.
Now I don't know if I believe that totally b/c when I had my 2nd and 3rd I didn't have nearly the loss I did with my first. I think it was due to better nutrition and less stress. I did however have hot flashes so I was really experiencing varying hormonal changes.

I use Aveda products, they are natural and wonderful, post-partum or not!

I don't know if it is going to help with pp hair loss (as I am only 1 mo pp), but I have stopped using shampoo all together. I have been washing my hair with just baking soda and either apple cider vinegar or lime juice as a rinse for close to a year and a half. My hair is so much healthier. The woman who cuts my hair has commented on how healthy it has gotten since I stopped with the shampoo. The shampoo was really stripping my hair. I would use conditioner, but that would just make my hair heavy and waxy feeling. Now my hair is soft and my natural curl has come back.
I only wash my hair about 2 times a week and sometimes only once. The other days I just rinse it with water. I think that if your body produces more oil you would have to wash it more often perhaps.

I have heard of this. Can I ask how you go about this specifically? Do you have a box of baking soda in shower? Do you use a spray bottle for the vinegar? Any lessons learned?
Thanks!!!

This is what I do. I have an old 1 qt yogurt container. When I am going to wash my hair I put a scoop of bs in it before I step in the shower. I use a little less than 1/4 c. Once in the shower, I wet my hair and use a little water to make the bs into a paste. Then I put the paste in my hair and massage it in. I then wash the rest of me. After that I rinse out the bs. I keep my lime juice and acv in the shower. I pour a couple of tablespoons into my container and fill the rest of the way with water and then pour that over my hair while I work that in. Then I rinse with regular water. It is best if you can use cooler water with the rinses, but sometimes I am not up for the cool water in my shower Also, when my hair is feeling a little dry I will put my bs in my container and then add enough honey to make the paste (the honey just replaces the water). Also, if you want to do this I suggest you find a place that sells big bags of bs, as I think it would get expensive if you just bought boxes. I get 12 lb bags from Sam's for less than $6. I use alot of bs around the house like in my laundry and for cleaning.
I found out about doing this on a Yahoo group I belong to that is for women (I guess men could join too ) who try to eliminate chemicals from their lives. Here is the link if you are interested

Ok Beth and Chicken Lady, I'm really interested in this topic since my hair has changed so much from pregnancy to pregnancy, and I do have a tendency to dry hair.
But...I have a couple of concerns. Beth, do you think the baking soda would wash out hairspray? I had to cut my hair QUITE short because of the damage done by ??? I don't color or perms so I don't know where the damage came from. Anyway... that means, I have to use some hairspray until it grows out some.
My next question, I'm a sucker for nice smelling stuff in the shower - I'm not sure about the smell of apple cider vinegar in my hair. I use ACV in my salad dressing. I'm afraid my dh would say my hair smelled like salad!
Chicken Lady - Could you tell me a little bit more about why you like Aveda? Are they really natural products? Could you recommend one for restoring moisture? Like Beth, I have found that so many shampoo/cond products just weigh my hair down and make it feel unnatural. They are sooo expensive - have you found an online source that you like?
I'm getting frustrated with all the "stuff" out there that's worthless. I just want something that cleans, doesn't weigh my hair down, and is healthy! Thanks for the help!

Well, I think that it would wash out the hair spray. Really water would wash it out in theory, but you need to make the water "wetter" in a sense and that is what the bs does. It will raise the ph of the water. (Ok, if my chemistry is messed up, please someone correct me )Now, you might have to wash with the bs everyday in order to feel like you are getting the hairspray out, but maybe not, you could experiment.
As for the acv, you could put a couple of drops of some essential oil in the acv rinse to make it smell better. Beware, though, as some eos will dry your hair. The women on the yahoo group know which ones to use. Also, if you rinse well you probably won't smell the acv. There are also alternatives like lime juice, lemon juice (for oily hair), and cooled very strong chamomile tea. Again, women on the yahoo group use different things. They are really a wealth of knowledge.
If you decide to go no poo, please realize that it takes some time for your hair to regulate. Your scalp is probably used to producing alot of oil to compensate for all the stripping that the shampoo does. I really didn't have much of a transition but many women do. You just need to experiment. I think that in the beginning I would wash my hair every other day. Then I slowly started to wash it less and less.
hth,
Beth

I thought I had heard that hair loss is caused (besides what acysty said about not losing hair during pregnancy and it all falling out later) by low estrogen. I have sadly had three miscarriages in the past year (since Mar 06). Each time I miscarried somewhere between 6-11 weeks. And after each miscarriage I have had that postpartum hair loss beginning about 1-2 months after and lasting quite awhile...in fact running into the next pregnancies. Right now, I'm in the middle of hair loss again (my last miscarriage was back in March). I'm hoping it stops soon! But to me, this hair loss doesn't go along with the buildup of hair from a pregnancy, as I haven't been pregnant these times for more than 11 weeks. I think it falls in line with low estrogen. And I don't think shampoos will make a difference. But if you find something, please let me know! Or if there is another better explanation, I'd love to hear it!
I know when I did carry our sixth child was born, I was on a prenatal vitamin that the Dr. said would help reduce the amount of hairloss postpartum...but it was the exact same!!! (The Dr. also said it would help lower risk of premature labor...still had it...help nausea...still had it...side effect was a higher birth weight...had one of our lowest!)
I'm really interested in the no shampoo way!! Might just have to try that out...at least to see the results, if not to stop hair loss.
Oh and as an aside...anyone else have hair loss after a miscarriage? Maybe that should be another thread??

That's an interesting point about miscarriages - I have either been pregnant or recovering from a pregnancy or misacarriage for basically the last 10 years, and I've had pretty steady hair loss, although I must say it is really picking up now that I am 5 months post partum with my third child.
