Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope this isn't too silly a question. In my (sadly deficient) reading of Montessori I see mention of mats for the children to work on. Can anyone explain what the point of this is? Also, what sort of mats do you use? Are they just cushion size or does the work itself take place on them? If so, don't they get wrinkled up and therefore difficult to work on?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!

the actual work is done on the mat to help the child corral the materials. It also makes a statement to the other children that this work belongs to the child at the mat for that time. The child returns the work to its proper place when done and either places new materials on the mat or rolls it up.

A throw rug type of thing works well if it is thick enough not to wrinkle and not too thick that it wont roll. A good sized tray works just as well.
