Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm using the bookTeaching Montessori in the Home and the letter templates seem very small. The author says to use 6" x 6" poster board. If you have made your own, what size board did you use? And how did you make your letters? What size did you make them? Does it matter?

Cheryl,

I made my "sandpaper letters" by printing the letters off on cardstock. If you go to Montessori Materials, click on Language Materials and then click on Templates - Metal Insets,Sandpaper Letters. I made sure the print was at 100% before printing.

I cut each letter out first. Then I covered each letter entirely with silver glitter glue and let it dry. Finally I glued the letters on colored index cards.

Pink for consonants
Blue for vowels
Green for numerals

HTH,

Mare

Mare,

Thanks for your reply. I am going to use the small letters from the library book I referenced above. I went to the beach yesterday and while my dh was driving I was cutting away.....

That link you mentioned is great. I think I'm going to make some more materials this week.

My mother made the sandpaper letters from Hainstock's book, and I have fond memories of those letters. I just bought the sandpaper, but I was wondering what kind of cardstock do you use for these? I found 65 lb in the scrapbooking aisle, which seems a bit flimsy.

Suggestions?

Jenn,

I haven't cut mine yet, but I purchased frame matting to make the sandpaper letters. They were on sale at Hobby Lobby for 50% off and I ended up getting them regular price $6.99 for a big sheet. I don't know the actual dimensions, but it was a sheet bigger than posterboard.

I used tag board that I had leftover from an Art Methods class. I used either rubber cement or spray adhesive to glue the letters onto the tag board (I believe it was the first). My fourth child is now using them and they have held up very well.

One recommendation, do not use your best scissors to cut the sandpaper. I ruined a very nice pair of scissors when I cut out the letters and numbers 6 years ago.

I used posterboard. It does seem kind of flimsy. They probably won't tear, but they can get bent easily.

I used a light timber-plywood. I cut the plywood with the jigsaw and then sanded them, they came up quite nicely and glued the letters on.

Frame matting...that's a great idea.

What is tag board? I'm not familiar with the term.

Erin, we don't have a jigsaw, nor do I have any experience with any kind of saw...but your idea is great. I'm tool-impaired.

For what is worth,
I used the templates from

JMJ Publishing I like the fact that they have different types of alphabets to choose from. I made small letters and mounted them on colored index cards (blue for vowels, pink for consonant) then I stored them in a 3*5 file box. It has worked great for us.

Tag board is thicker than poster board. My Art Methods professor liked it because of its durability. He had us use it to make things that he felt we would use year after year in the classroom. I don't know if it comes in different weights (I got mine from the university bookstore). I found the following on Amazon, tag board.

Natalia, Thanks for the remeinder about those templates from JMJ. Suzanne has done such a great job.

Christine, thanks for clearing that up about tag board for me.

FWIW, I spent today buying some mat board to use. We have both a Michael's and A.C. Moore in our town, and Michael's charges almost 3x more per large piece of mat board than A.C. Moore.
