So sorry to bother you all if this is a repeat question, but I'm wondering if you could quickly list off the resources you have for CGS. I currently own the manual for construction of materials, 3-6. I'm interested in purchasing the binder telling how the lessons are presented and also in knowing where you purchased most of your materials or supplies for materials. Thanks SO much!!!

I have gotten our CGS materials from:

Catholic Montessori

Our Father's House

The Shepherd's Closet

For the materials we've made at home, I've purchased the items at Michael's craft store and Hobby Lobby.

Cay - Which materials have you made at home? I'm trying to get a picture in my mind of what these parables and bible story "works" look like! I definately want to get started on this because I have just started set faith formation time in the mornings.

Also, where specifically can I get the lessons for the bible stories and parables? Thanks SO much!!!

I have a question....if you are painting wooden items, what is the best, durable, non toxic paint that you can use?? I am trying to paint my books of the bible...thank you to my dad for patiently cutting them all out for me!!

My son made the Good Shepherd sheepfold and a Jesse Tree. I copied the Jesse Tree symbols from Moria's album and laminated them and put circular stickies on the backs to stick to the Jesse Tree. I also made all the materials for the Pearl and Merchant presentation. I also did the St. Nicholas presentation last year and made the materials. We've made clothespin figures as well. For some reason my clay figures never turn out good enough

so I quit making them and prefer wooden or clothespin figures.

Kristin, This article is very insightful. Scroll down after you click to see it. It even mentions that the CGS has been called "the deschooling of Sunday School."

It reminds us:

"Children are free to listen and respond to the only true teacher, Jesus Christ himself. This frees the adult to contemplate and enjoy God's presence with the children."

That's the defining feature of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Bible-based, Montessori-style, church-approved, Christian spiritual formation program for children age 3-12.

I missed this important point myself in the first Mosaic class I presented last year (I was using Moira's albums with some of the presentations) until Moira explaned it so well and so carefully to me. I was careful after that not to ask questions that demanded an answer. There are no "wrong" or "right" answers in the atrium. And my presentations could not have "lacked" anything. It was totally between the child and God. I served only as an instrument.

This article gives a good scenerio:

The children in the atrium hear the gospel story of the Good Shepherd twice.

First, a leader called the catechist gives them a short, simple introduction to the story in her own words. She is careful not to embellish. She emphasizes the Good Shepherd's personal love and protective presence.

Next, the catechist lights a candle, then reads the story directly from the Bible. She reads the text softly, slowly, solemnly and without expression.

As she reads, she moves small figures of a shepherd, sheep and a sheepfold, simple materials she makes herself out of wood or clay. When she is done, she pauses, then poses a question or two.

"The sheep of the Good Shepherd are so fortunate. They are loved so much. I wonder who they are?"

The children, in this case age 3 to 6, respond. The catechist does not explain to them that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and they are his beloved sheep. She waits for them to realize it on their own.

She does not want to deprive them of the joy of that spiritual discovery.

And I just ordered Moira's albums. Looking very much forward to learning more about CGS and getting started. Thanks again.
