Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Help me stock some art supplies for my 4yo! The only time he's happy seems to be when he's making artistic messes . I have several things already, but I'm thinking of organizing a wide assortment of materials, within his reach, in a cabinet under our china hutch. This way it will be available to him but sort of out of sight. And, I can latch the cabinets to keep the 1 yo out! (Incidently, the inspiration for this idea came from Jen when I talked about having all the art materials downstairs and the problem with them getting lost when they are brought upstairs. I now have a great place to store them up here!)
So far I have dot markers, water color paints, colored chalk, play-dough, a ton of stamps and stamp pads, crayons and colored pencils. Any other great ideas? I'm not looking for projects. I need things that he can work with/ experiment with while the other kids do their math. His desire to work with art materials is insatiable. I used to worry about this and try to get him to do other things, but I think I need to just go with his interests right now.

pipe cleaners, egg cartons, tissue paper, scissors, glue sticks, tape, construction paper, brown paper (works great with chalk), tempura paints (though I prefer those to be used outside)

plastic shoe box with rice (or beans or sand) and measuring cups, spoons, etc.

Can also use sand for art (use glue for the picture and then sprinkle on some sand).

Pom-poms, scraps of fabric, old magazines, plastic canvas with plastic needle, latch-hook kit, and here are some other activities.

Mine love those scissors that make all the fancy cuts. We keep a recycle box for scrap paper that the kids love to get into for cutting paper. My kids favorites are

Colored pencils
Crayons
Markers
Glue sticks
Sketch books from the dollar store
Popcycle sticks
Beads and string/pipe cleaners for making jewelry
Water colors
Water color pencils
Playdough with wooden rolling pins and free access to my cookie cutters
Construction paper
Scissors
Holy cards
The Montessori square paper for tracing boxes. We don't own Ny of the tracing boxes though. They like to make books with them.
Stapler
Hole punch
Yarn

Oh, how exciting, Becky!

I love all the ideas suggested, and especially Lara's suggestion of old magazines. That's a good reminder for me and I'm going to set out some pretty gardening catalogs (that I'm NOT ordering from ) along with my favorite preschool scissors and construction paper and glue! My 4yo will be thrilled!

I was going to suggest another consideration of setting out a select few art supplies at a time. I find that if I set out everything I have for my younger crew it results in total chaos and play-dough ground into carpets with abstract glue art on the windowsill. Also, it seems that if everything is set out all at once, after a bit of time the eye starts to look past supplies and they languish. But, if I take a little time and thoughtfully set out a few art/creativity supplies at a time, the little children use them and really enjoy them. (I keep more art supplies out for my older kids) Then, when I notice interest flagging, I just rotate out some different supplies and voila - freshness! It does take a little effort on my part to observe that materials aren't being visited, and freshen them....but no more effort and time than cleaning abstract Elmers glue art off the windowsill with a spackle knife.

I keep a few color pencils and washable markers out all the time, along with newsprint/scratch paper.

I'm going to borrow from Lara's inspiration and set out a little cutting station with pretty gardening catalogs to cut apart and I think my 4yo will really enjoy that!! Thanks, Lara!

old books of wallpaper samples (ask the stores)
butcher paper.. goes a long way with prolific artists
cardboard from any source
scratch paper is any paper with one side still unused
oh and paper plates can be fun
don't forget juice concentrate cans and such can also be fun to decorate or use to make critters

Others have mentioned most of what I would suggest, but here are a few more ideas:

color pastels (and I would also get/make a blending stump--my kids prefer to use a stump rather than their hands because it's much more precise)
drawing pencils (graphite in various hardnesses)
sculpey
stickers
water-soluable crayons

Thanks for all the great ideas! This should keep him busy for a while!
Jen, I wanted to thank you for the great reminder! After reading your post and giving it some thought, I think I will continue to store the materials in the china hutch but maybe keep it latched. Then, I'll use the Montessori trays idea to put a few out on the top, still out of the 1yo's reach, that he can choose from.

Jen, my 3-1/2 yo LOVES scissors and paper! I'm constantly helping him clean up his clippings.
