Does anyone have experience with the CHC preschool lesson plans? I know it is pre-k and kinder combined. I'm just trying to decide if they would be helpful to have for my 4yo.

I did not find them very useful. Other library books geared towards the preschool age had more activities and suggestions.

I liked the ideas but they were so loose -like a section for each week, rather than each day to jot your ideas - it was easy for me to not pick enough. Of course, if you are going to use the kinder plans the next year, the pk come with and so its probably worth it. I liked the ideas on each page for kinder because it kept me from searching the library and internet... where I often get sidetracked. The books suggested are great and the little workbooks. My only problem was I used the LSFLF in pk and then in kinder we were way ahead, which is great, but then the plans were all off.

Thanks Lara and Amanda! My ds who will be 4 next year wants to do school with his siblings. I think I'll save my money though. I'm not sure the LP's from CHC are the way to go. Maybe just the preschool workbooks instead.

about the workbooks/supplements - We liked God's love story and my son enjoyed coloring it, as well as Numbers for Little Folks and Letters for little folks. Nice and gentle but meaningful. Who am I? was a little scripted for me, but both my kids liked the workbook pages and crafts when we did them. If you want something for him to just have at the table you might like it for the workbooks, but I liked the My Jesus and I packet much better. One other idea- I often see the kinder/pk plans on CathSwap on yahoo. You could join to keep an eye out for them and get them for $15 or under.

Here is a site that has a preschool program that I purchased a few years ago. It was laid out very nicely with a day-by-day calendar, supplies, themes, etc. KidSparkz
Oh, and I have no affiliation or other connection with this site. It's just something I happened upon a few years ago.

Thanks Lara, I'll check it out. Something all laid out would make my life easier!
Amanda, I used Who Am I? with my dd years ago. I agree it is too scripted, and if I remember correctly, I thought it was a bit too wordy for a preschooler. I still have it on my shelf though. I've often wondered if I could just get the workbook, use the teacher's guide to get the gist of the lesson, and wing it. It can probably be simplified.
Is the My Jesus and I packet a CHC product, or did you get that elsewhere?

CHC used to sell it - its about 2 or 3 dollars. Yes, here is the link - My Jesus and I
Its $3 for the booklet and 1.25 for the guide. It was meant for first graders when there was no catechism before first communion, I think.
Seton sells it too, but it looks like it costs more. I think some other plans use it. There is a poster collection that goes along that chc doesn't sell. I can see the benefit, but never looked into it.

While I found the preschool plans from CHC to be not particularly useful, my four year old son has enjoyed their newer preschool workbooks.
The workbooks are nicely laid out and provide as much seatwork as he was ready for. He's been quite happy with the workbooks plus some crafts and readalouds.

Thanks for the information regarding My Jesus and I Amanda. I've seen that in the catalog but I guess I just passed over it, thinking it was a coloring book or something. I think it looks sweet for a preschooler's first religion lessons.
Ekbell, do the CHC workbooks teach the child basic reading at that level, or are they mostly an introduction to the letters? From the samples it looks like they cover each of the letters for recognition purposes. I'm thinking my 4yo might be ready for something more next year. But then, I hate to push him... (Decisions, decisions!)

My 4 year old has enjoyed the Explode the Code A B C and D books this year. We just started gently sounding out the first I See Sam reader. He will turn 5 in June. I don't think he'll be quite ready for the regular Explode the Code books this Fall, and I have plans to use the Pink Card series I never got around to using with my first (but this is more the learning style of my second, anyway, my first loves writing).
Anyway, I think you could definitely start with something like these books. He could work through them at his pace. If he's ready for more, he will fly through them, and you can just start a reading program of choice. Kwim? It wouldn't be a waste either way, if that makes sense.
In my limited experience, it is practically impossible to predict months in advance at this age. Sort of like trying to predict when a baby will learn to crawl or walk. One baby will act like they are just about to do it for months on end before doing it. Another baby will all of a sudden one day decide they want to do it, and then that's it, it is done. Some do it early, others do it later.
Not to get off track, but I was just recently telling my husband how these early elementary years are when homeschooling makes so much sense. Children in the same grade are sometimes almost a year apart in age, and a few months can make such a difference for readiness and determine whether a child will struggle with a concept or breeze through it. I know you know that  It is just fascinating to observe, ime!

I agree Lindsay! I think I am just excited because my soon to be 4yo is a lot like my dd. He shows many of the signs of learning to read. He knows the letters, asks what words are, tracks with his finger, etc. I almost feel like if I don't start him soon I'll miss my window of opportunity.
My other boys were a different story. Daniel was in no way ready to read at 4. As a matter of fact, he wasn't ready for anything academic at that age. He could barely sit long enough to hear a story read. He really started reading at the age of 8 though and, while he started later, he caught right up to where he should be. I used the ETC books for him. He loved them. (Thanks, by the way, for reminding me about those!)
Matt showed readiness earlier, but now at 7 he seems to have hit a plateau and is frustrated with trying to learn to read. As you said, they are all so different!
I guess we just pray for guidance. I really like the CHC program and want to sort of "make everything fit" but I know that isn't necessarily the best thing. I'll have to re-think it again when he's ready for kindergarten.
