Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been doing lots of reading about Montessori lately, and I want to incorporate lots of those ideas into our home, especially for my youngest, who will be 2 next month.

My problem is, she just throws everything. Her motor skills are a little delayed, and her language is also delayed--she only has maybe 3 words at the moment. She can't self feed with utensils yet, because as soon as you hand her the spoon or fork, she throws it on the floor. She is still using a sippy cup because she throws that too.

Her play time is often spent either arranging her toys on shelves and furniture all around the room or throwing everything on the floor. I've tried coloring with crayons, but she just throws them.

I've been wanting to do some Montessori activities, but it's frustrating to set up an activity for her to just throw everything on the floor.

Any ideas to break her of this habit?

I tend to provide my children at that stage, which seems to be fairly common, with a collection of 'Things to Throw' and 'Things to aim at' and then we work at only throwing 'Things to Throw' and only aiming them at acceptable targets. After that we'll work on other things to do with the things that shouldn't be thrown.

With a sufficently varied selection there can be lots of things to do
-making different colors of crumpled paper balls and coloring paper bags to match, and then encouraging the child to throw (or drop) the ball in the matching paper bag
-finding out far different things can be thrown
and so on

Thanks! I hadn't thought of turning throwing into an activity. I'll definitely have to try that out.

My 2 1/2 year old son is going through a throwing phase. He has to pick it up right after the throws it, of course. If he continues, the toys/object is taken away.
If it is at dinner time or something, he must go to his room for isolation.

I like the previous posters idea of giving them some game where they CAN throw. That is GREAT for getting it out of their system!
