Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lots of patience.

I suggest getting a spare shoe with two laces - each a different color, so they can see what they are doing.

Teach each step at a time, mastering the first one before moving on.

Begin by properly showing how to untie (this could be all one step as they usually know this one already! just not doing it so it definitely doesn't knot).

When I was a child, we had a doll that was (for lack of a better term) a learning doll for learning such things as tying shoes, zipping coats, and buttoning sweaters. My gracious mother saved this doll and I now have it for my kids. They don't really realize that they are learning these skills, because they are just playing with the doll! But it is fun to watch them lacing the dolls shoes and learning to tie a bow; then unbottoning her sweater, then zipping up the jacket. She learned to lace-up and tie the shoe from watching me do it several thousand times.

My dd, 5 years old, is quite accomplished at tying knots (no-name knots, just twisting and turning and lacing the shoe lace until a knot is a acheived and no-one person can undo it without several grunts of displeasure at what's she's done) ~ however, she is now comfortable at tying her shoe .

A lot of it will just depend on their fine motor skills.. some children can do this at 5, maybe even a smidge younger.. but some won't be able to do it until 7 or older.

So with that.. anything that helps develop the fine motor skills will help them be capable of learning to tie shoes.

Does anyone tie their shoes differently than the "standard" way? I didn't learn to tie my shoes until I was in first or second grade, and then my friend taught me a method she called "bunny bows"...I STILL tie my shoes this way, to this day!

My husband taught the children the traditional way (4 boys so far, probably didn't want them doing something called "bunny bows" LOL) but I'm thinking of teaching my daughter (who is now 6, but has some fine motor skills issues) the "bunny bows" way...any reason not to? It hasn't scarred me for life, even though my mom and my husband laugh at me when I talk about it!!!

If you really want some options, check this out:

Ian's Shoelace Site

Probably just shows what a geek I am, but I found it all very interesting!

My son was 6. Dh made him a little wooden foot which DS drilled holes in and sanded and waxed, and then he practised - but it was very frustrating to him. In the end we just said every time we went out "try and then mama will tie them" and all of a sudden he is doing them on his own every time. I was beginning to think he'd be in velcro shoes for the rest of his life!

Seems like I remember this now from college (child development classes) and 7 is the normal age.. yes people think it's Kindergarten age (5-6yrs) because schools try and get parents to teach it by then.. but it's really more appropriate and doable for 7 yr olds.

I have to confess, this is where I am, too. I mean, I HATE tying my shoes (I am one of those people who leave them loosely tied and just slip them on and off) so why should I inflict this torture on my son? I avoid buying tie shoes for all of us now. My last triumph was finding a nice pair of dress shoes for dh to wear to work that are slip-on.

Me too. And, then they magically learn how to do it themselves! With a couple daddy-sessions thrown in and we call it a day!

Seriously, with the magical invention of VELCRO, this is something that isn't a necessity anymore and when they are ready, they just learn to do it on their own, or if they are feeling "left out" and they're motivated, they learn so fast!

Bunny bows worked for my children. Both were 5-6 years old. Ds's Kindergarten teacher suggested putting laces onto a coffee can and having ds practice with them (less confusing than shoes...).

Dd learned to tie her ghillies (Irish dance soft shoes) right away, at age 8 - I have no idea how they're tied! I told her if she was old enough to Riverdance, she was old enough to tie her own shoes.

Last night, I decided to re-teach my 6 and 7 year olds how to tie their shoes. I had tried earlier (at ages just barely 5 and 6 maybe?) and we were both frustrated, so we quit for awhile. After reading this thread, I guess I was inspired a bit. Anyway, the 7 year old picked it up with no trouble after 1 or 2 tries. She's a shoe-tying pro    The 6 year old picked it up OK after a few more tries. She is inconsistent, but it works out OK. Both were thrilled to have this new skill    I should have done this earlier maybe, but waiting like I did was SO MUCH EASIER (for all of us)!
Just thought I'd share our family's recent experience...

God bless,
Christine
