Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This question, or a variation on the theme, crops up from time to time with my 3yo, usually when he gets distressed when I drop off my 10yo at school. (Both eldest are in the UK state system and, though I would love to take them out, I don't think it would work without their cooperation and as it is, we wouldn't have it.) We have decided to home educate our youngest two and we are excited about it, but would love to know how other families have coped with explaining their decision to their children in similar circumstances. I don't want them to feel like they're missing out.

With thanks in anticipation of your wisdom!

I don't think you can do anymore than just explain that their school is at home and they will do lots of fun things with you.

As they get older you can explain the philosophy of why you keep them home, but for now - there probably is no explanation that would make much sense to them. You may have to endure the questions for awhile.

Perhaps I am old fashioned, but the response that my mother and father always gave me when I asked for something they wouldn't let me have would seem to work here...

"Because I said so!"

Cheers!
