Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I can’t find where, but I thought I read somewhere a philosophy advocating cursive for beginning writers. My ds knows his letters and can print them legibly but not beautifully. He has acquired his skill through asking and then practicing on his own. I had planned to begin a more formal curriculum in the fall; however, he wants to learn cursive. Do I skip ahead to follow his interest or is printing necessary first?

I suggest following his interest and go with the cursive.

As he gets older if you find that his printing becomes slopppy you can always have a review at that time.

I think it is a Montessori idea. I remember reading about it, but couldn't remember where, either. Possibly her "Secret of Childhood"? I found this explanation (not what I remember, but may be useful): Sandpaper Letters and First Writing It looks like A Beka Books has resources for beginning cursive in Kindergarten.

Thank you for your replies. I now have the confidence to proceed. and my next question would have been regarding curriculum so thx for the link! I dug through so many books and finally found where cursive first is advocated - Alpha-Phonics by Samuel Blumenfeld which I was thinking of using and had set aside quite awhile ago.

As the other ladies have said, there's definitely a precedent set that younger kids can learn cursive. And if your son is interested, go for it!

I wrote about this topic awhile ago and got lots of interesting replies, so be sure to browse the comments:

Cursive vs. Printing: Is One Better Than the Other?

Hope that helps!

Go ahead and start cursive. Though my dd is teaching herself to print, the first type of handwriting that I am going to *teach* her is cursive. We're currently using lowercase cursive sandpaper letters, and will move on to tracing in sand, using chalk on a chalk board, etc. soon.
