Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi -- Does anyone have any suggestions for introducing a 4-year-old to why we celebrate Thanksgiving? Can anyone recommend good books on the subject appropriate for a preschooler? I am wondering how to approach this topic from a Catholic perspective. (I was raised Protestant, so of course learned to regard the Pilgrims as heroes. I'm not sure that would be the way to look at them as a Catholic. Then again, the PC version of history demonizing them certainly is extreme, too!)

Thanks for your help!

We've always borrowed whatever the library has available, so I don't have book suggestions, but I do have one idea.

Years ago we were in a Catholic co-op and the mom who presented Thanksgiving pointed out that our Thanksgiving wasn't the first. She talked about the pilgrim story, but she also highlighted several examples from the bible (Abel's offering in Gen 4:4, Noah's thanksgiving in Gen 8:20, etc).

I got story of pilgrims from our library this week for my 4 year old and we enjoyed it. I think it did a nice job of explaining the 1st Thanksgiving simply. It's the best I found after searching through Amazon's lists.
