Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

There are several exercises which utilize both the cards and the insets. If money is the issue, you could cut up some cardstock and trace each of the shapes 3 times, then fill in one of each all the way, one with a thicker line and the other leave as a thin line.

I made parts of the geometric cabinet out of foam board - it was do-able, but took a long time. I'm still working on locating a decently priced one (under $99), but may have to just purchase it.

Here's my geo cabinet experience:

I bought some files on eBay where someone re-created all the geo cabinet shapes and traced them onto stiff felt, added brads, and tried to use those as you would the wooden shapes. It just didn't work.

I finally bought the real geometry cabinet and I find it very useful - for 3-6, it's a great fine motor skills work (tracing the shapes with a finger as well as onto paper), for 6-9 it's fantastic for learning shape names as well as tracing to make designs, study concentric shapes, etc.

If you don't have the cabinet, you won't need the solid/thick/thin cards - use some sort of shape nomenclature cards instead. The cards are made specifically for use with the cabinet and aren't much good on their own.

Also, my husband and I calculated the cost of printing the geo cabinet cards and by the time you buy cardstock, printer ink, and laminate them it's not any cheaper than buying a set from Alison's, plus from them you get a wooden cabinet to put them in.

I only made them because I thought people expected me to have them :)

Bottom line: you don't *have* to have either to study shapes, but if you get one, get the other.
