Through the years, I have steadily accumulated lots of Melissa and Doug's wooden items for our hs. This weekend my dd and I went to Ross (does everyone have a Ross store?) and I found lots of items there for half the cost. I bought extra for Christmas gifts.
I kid you not, the Wooden Farm Cube Puzzle has been a hit for all ages...from 73 yr old Opa to 3 yr old Annie. I leave it on the kitchen table and everyone gives it a try. There are 16 blocks that can be turned into puzzles of 6 different farm animals.
I found ours at Ross' for a mere $3.00.

I have also found them in our Marshall's store for much less. Dh bought the wooden cutting vegetables for a MUCH higher price for his nephew, and I ended up getting a bargain for our son's birthday from Marshall's. The money I saved I could get more!

For you ladies who have a Ross and Marshall's and ooooh Target available to you...am I on your Christmas list? 
Living in a different country and hearing all about your great deals at stores that I only vaguely remember makes me nostalgic. Yes Kathryn, I know England has good deals *somewhere* out there!  I just have to break out of my comfort zone and find them.

What I wouldn't do to live in Europe and England for one year to find things that I could never get in the US. I'll trade. I'm drooling over all the books you can get (OOP and new) in England. I made a quick trip years ago and had just a half hour to visit a used book store. All the Chesterton, Belloc and other books by Sheed and Ward were just calling to me!!
Have you seen the movie 84 Charing Cross Road? I think it was a book, too, but I haven't read it. That of course was pre-internet, but this woman in NYC was writing to a bookseller in UK for some unobtainable titles in the US.
And I won't go into detail, but the possibilities you have of buying resources on the Liturgical Year related to a different country...oooh la la!!!!! Can you make a quick trip to Hungary, Germany or Austria for me? Holland? I'd love some St. Nicholas stuff...the real deal!

Hi Jenn (and Cay),
I love our wooden food from Melissa and Doug. Can you tell me which set or sets Marshall's (or Ross) has now? And at what price, if you can remember? It's hard enough to get to a store without the kids, so I don't want to waste a trip if they only have one of the sets we already own. We already have this set and this set. Thanks!
By the way, I highly recommend this folding castle and these castle figures from Melissa and Doug. I bought them both elsewhere for less than the site that I have linked to, so be sure to do a search and compare prices. My younger girls love them both.

The first set is the one I got. It's always a hit or miss anyway what will be there. I didn't realize there were other wooden food sets. Ds loves them, although he likes the real thing even better. I made a stew with lots of vegetables 2 weeks ago. I had him help cut up the vegetables. He was fascinated. When I showed the green peppers with the seeds, that was just sublime joy! Now he takes the wooden pepper and looks for the seeds!

I agree with you on the castle and figures -- it's the best I've seen and very reasonably priced. Santa brought it last year for my little 6 yo knight and they play with it often. It's big and strong enough for my li'l darlin' almost 3 yos to sit in or on just to irritate his older siblings! Julie's Stuff (a Catholic homeschooler and on this forum I think?) has this if you're looking for Christmas!
