I'm trying to switch a lot of my learning to Montessori type work as I have seen over the things we played with last year how effective it is. I try to make as much as I can to save on costs, but don't mind spending if it is truly more desirable. I have seen the advantages of bead work as I made some of my own last year to teach my 3 yr old counting to 100 and using the multiplication strips with my 6 yr old. This year I plan to use them a lot more (addition, subtraction, carrying numbers and borrowing, the decimal system skip counting, multiplying, and for squaring and cubing). So, my question is: is there really an advantage to buying rather than making? And if so, which 1 set would you buy?

I think there are other threads on this topic, you might want to search. I was just going to say, I've made a lot of our bead material, and I've also purchased some. Here's the thing - it takes a LOT of time to make your own. Not just the actual making, but figuring out what you want to make and getting the right supplies, too. So I'd consider how SOON you want to have the beads ready to go.
When I first started making them, I just left them out on a counter and worked on them for 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, kwim? I wasn't in a huge hurry for them. Later on, however, I found myself in a big hurry to have other bead supplies, without many "5 minute" stretches available, so I ordered what I needed. And I loved what I got! I found a few things at reduced prices, which helped make the decision. (Like Alison's bargain basement.)

Thank you HappyMama. I'm considering having my older 3 help me with the project and this could turn out to be fun. I'd start out making the decanomial type set as I think this would lend to the most uses.
We'll see how it goes. If it gets to bee too much, I'll just buy the set at Allison's.

Definitely the decanomial bead bar box will get the most use, with pieces being pulled out for other work - that with a few sets of the black and white bead stairs should work out well. If you're brave enough, you could also make the long and short chains with the same material....
