Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had my then 1st grader do some research last year. He was reading fairly well and I think they need to be able to . One example...we did a dinosaur unit and each day he had some research to do on his own. For example, I gave him a list of dinos and he had to use his resources to find their heights, what they ate, did they live on land, sea, or air. This worked really well because I knew that he would be able to easily find his answers because I looked through the books beforehand. We also had luck with easy reader nonfiction books for doing reports. Each month last year we studied a different biome and he had to report on an animal from that biome. I gave him a list of questions that he had to make sure were answered in all his reports (what do they eat, adaptations, classification, nocturnal). After a couple months it became second nature for him and he did really well. This also helped him organize his report as each question was a new paragraph.

I think starting early like this is great and I'm glad I did it. I waited with my older two and working indepently is hard for them.

If I'm researching with a younger one, it's usually while they're next to me and we're off hunting on a rabbit trail. I don't require it, but we do explore and research quite frequently.

I usually google specific topics alone first. I leave them open in tabs. We read through them together. I set out a basket of reference books and picture books that coordinate with the theme being researched and let them have at it.

Sometimes, we read books together, but usually a child is quite interested and consumes all the information I give them very quickly on their own. There might be some informal narrating. It's just a natural pace, I don't force anything really.
