Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Could you use montessori materials as a unit study? LIke the the astronomy materials for instance? or the volcano materials?

just wondering if the sequnetial nature of montessori lends itself to this or not. some of these subject areas seem like they could be kind of 'stand alone.'

(i'm thinking of using some of these in the summer, to peak his interest in montessori hsing.

I think it could be done that way, and it is sort of the way I approach it at times.
Here is a little of what I did with mammals
a while back. And lately we are into botany, so I put together some trays and pulled out the botany puzzles and some fun extensions.
In a way, the Great Lessons are a tool for organizing topics around a theme. I know some ladies here have done these (I have not yet) and can probably share what they did.

From what I understand, the Montessori method and materials are intended to work together in a definite progression, but it seems that most who use Montessori in the homeschool setting have come to find that this particular environment necessitates more flexibility in application.

IMHO, I think that specific materials like those you listed (I'm thinking of cards, models, etc) would be perfect to use as a supplement to a unit study, with or without incorporating the method itself. However, I do belive that getting the maximum benefit out of the materials, does involve having a child that can focus for a sufficient period of time and use the materials with care (which are traits that the earlier materials will have helped instill), KWIM?

Looking forward to hearing what you decide and how it goes over with your son!
