Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 10 month old is already very interested in "joining in" - I really need to find some kind of sturdy chair and little table for him. The Michael Olaf set is way too pricey for me (though I love it!)Lakeshore has a toddler table and first chair in 3 different sizes - I am considering one. They are still expensive - but I am wondering about doing them for his first birthday - as we do not need much else. Also I have seen with my now 4 year old that providing him with good quality materials at an early age has really helped him develop - he would sit and work quietly on activities from an early age.

Has anyone bought the Lakeshore set - or got any other alternative for a first table and chair for a 12m old

I'm using a coffee side table. If those are too high, you could cut the legs down. Ikea has a children's size table with chairs. However, I think these options are too tall for a typical 12 mth old. My children at that age however prefer to either stand and work on the side table or work on the floor. It was only around 2+ years that they started choosing to sit down. If you still wanted to buy a table set, I would recommend getting those that have adjustable legs so that it would grow with the child.

we used a clip on chair to the big table for the first year. i also have a baby tenda but my littlies have always wanted to be at the big table so they never spent much time at the tenda table. mostly the chairs were used for standing on to get into cabinets where they weren't allowed!

We have a tiny footstool from baby bjorn that is just the right hieght for my toddler to sit on. It cost us 15 bucks years ago and all 3 of the kids have used it to sit at the coffee table like a "big kid" Not haveing the back made it easier for them to sit down.

Also our fabric/craft stores frequently have little wooden tables for not to much.

as for the lake shore my mom uses them for her classroom and has had good luck but it is pricey.

We have a set from IKEA that was $30 at the time -- it's now $40. We assembled and stained it ourselves - we have used it every day since then. And it's held up.

My oldest doesn't use it anymore, but everyone else does -- especially my 18 mo and my 3 yo.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think you have talked me out of spending my very restricted school budget on pricey furniture.

We are in Maryland for a FHC today - maybe I can talk my dh into stopping at Ikea on the way back - the poor man has a pathological fear of taking me to Ikea - he dislikes the store and the hours that visiting it generally means

I guess I can use Montessori mats on the floor.

I do have some little Michaels tables and chairs that my older kids used - but those chairs tip over very easily and they are better for age 3 and up
