I know that most of you are using the Cathecisis of the Good Shepherd as one of the means of introducing your children. I think some of you are using Moira Farrels albums as well. I am toying with the idea of getting then 3 -5 year one.
My question is, are you happy with this if you are usingit? Is it pretty much stand alone and complete in itself or do you have to use other materials / books to supplement.
I am just starting out learnign about this method, so I don't claim to have too much knowledge on it. What I am looking for is something that is easy for me to do and does not involve too much of prep before we can get started with it.
Thanks
Bevelyn

I don't know much about CGS, but I have Moira's albums, her Mass kit, the altar linens and her Holy Week plans/script which I got at Our Father's House.
I find the album very helpful and don't use any other books. (But I suppose you could!)
I'm not sure what you mean by prep work. If you mean research to write a script? Moira has it all written down for you (and what materials you will need). BUT you do have to make the materials for the presentation or buy them (so a trip to the craft store is necessary) The Mass Kit is used in at least the first three presentations in her first album.
FYI -- the Mass Kit (which you buy separately) comes with its own script, so you don't need the albums to start with the Mass kit (but you'll need an altar, but any side table or kid table that has a drawer or cabinet could work AND the altar linens which you can buy from her as well).
So... I'd say the Mass kit was the most "prep free," but I'd say everything else involves gathering materials of some sort.

I am using the 3-5 book for my 5-year-old. It is prep free- after I made all the materials last year
But you can get started with the Mass kit which you can buy. Other things can be made as simply or as compicated as you have time or inclination for.
I am also using a book called Leading Little Ones to Mary and memorizing Baltimore Catechism questions which my son does as part of his ConQuest club.
Moira's albums and CoGS are really unique in the way they present the faith to a child. So you can use them with or without other things, but they really don't compare as far as being more or less complete than another catechism program.

If you are looking for something easy to do and without prep work, then I don't think this is what you're looking for! However, if you could SEE this album and read through the lessons, I promise that you will be inspired to put in the time (and money) to get the materials and lessons ready.
This has turned out to be a very expensive program to follow, with the book, the mass kit, and the craft stuff that I'm always buying so that I can make materials. It's been worth it and one of my favorite things this year, but just know what you're getting into, I guess.

I guess I can't imagine using Moira's albums without first reading about Montessori in general and CGS specifically. It'd be like purchasing the number rods and "giving" them to a child without having any idea of the way a Montessori-trained educator would do it. Before I started using Moira's album (which I love, by the way,) I had visited & watched at an atrium, read dozens of books about Montessori, and purchased and read books published by cgsusa.org. (here's the link to their catalog.) The child does need to be prepared also. Even in an atrium with a trained catechist, they don't start with the "religious" presentations - they start with basic practical life presentations so that the children learn to concentrate, take turns, be quiet, and put materials away when they are finished. I guess I'd say that the more you can prepare, the better your chances are of loving this type of work.
