Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello. I'm working at home with my ds 4-1/2. We have a learning room that is coming along nicely and we do a mixture of Montessori (plenty of practical life work, a little sensorial, language arts and math), FIAR, Handwriting without Tears (wooden letter pieces, dough, slate, magnetic stamper), lots of art and music, and various unit studies.

I am considering also working with a neighbor's child/children. She has 7 children, and she has asked if I would work with either her dd 3-1/2 or her dd about-to-turn 6(or maybe both) while she schools her older children. This would probably be only 2-3 days a week.

What's most attractive about this idea for me is the opportunity for my son to benefit from the interaction with other children during our learning time. It would also help me to be more disciplined and structured about setting aside a certain time of day for our official learning work as I ease into home educating my children.

Has anyone else done this? Did you charge a fee? If so, what rate is appropriate? This would definitely be more work for me to observe and plan/prep appropriate work for each child, as right now my learning room shelves are set up for my ds 4-1/2 and my almost 2yo son. I would need to swap out half of the shelves on the days I was teaching my neighbor's children. My friend isn't able to do this as a co-op because she has her hands full working with the older children (and also needs to rest 3 hours every afternoon due to a medical condition). I'd like this to be win-win for both of us, and am not interested in making a profit on this, but a little extra income to help pay for more Montessori materials would be extremely helpful.

I'm open to any advice or suggestions anyone may have. Thanks in advance!

Heather

Well, I wouldn't but I am flat out coping with my workload now so I wouldn't want to be adding to it. You may want to think about how restrictive it will be for you(if an excursion/event came up that you wanted to attend etc).

Could they just come over for some regular playdates and you can throw in a fun activity if appropriate so your son can `work' with someone else?

You may also like to check out the legal side of having her 6yo regularly for school.

If you are not wanting to make a profit, maybe you could suggest some materials that she could contribute instead of regular payment.

She is lucky to have a good friend like you and even if it this arrangement doesn't work out, I'm sure you will be a support to her in other ways.
