your youngest kids, during work time, away from the older's materials? I ask b/c I'm trying to figure out how to set everything up AND incorporate 2 yo dd into our work time. She just barely turned two. I considered working during her nap but I don't think my older two would work well that late in the day. I think I could just keep redirecting her to her own materials (not sure what they'd be just yet) IF I just set my mindset up to accept that fact. I mean ,how is teaching her what she can and can't touch, in the schoolroom, much different than the rest of the day?? KWIM? I'm wondering what you all do... especially those of you with the beautifully and carefully laid out learning rooms!! I don't want to just plunk her in front of the tv. I had considered putting her in a home care situation for 3 mornings a week with a woman I know, but I'm still not sure how I feel about that option. TIA for any advice. I'll keep searching the forum. I read something the other day about "keep it few, keep it new"...I can definitely try that.

When my daughter was younger, my son and I would work for about an hour in the afternoon, basically me giving presentations. Then he was able to work in the morning almost completely on his own while I gave my attention to her. It worked really, really well.

Even though it can be harder to work later in the day, that is completely offset by how much easier it is to give presentations without the youngest ones there. And, it doesn't need to be for a long time, just enough to show new work.

I think it depends on the temperment of your child. We started with school while dd napped (up until she was about 2 1/2). DS coped fine with that time slot. Once that wasn't happening, I included her. If he had a worksheet, she had `a piece of paper' (which worked until she wanted exactly the same). I found that after a while she would wander off by herself. I didn't have school materials down at that stage that she could reach. I know some people have a `school box' of toys that only come out at school time to keep them interesting. For a long time she was quite painful during any kind of book reading - but she's great now!

I do a combo of redirecting and keeping things out of reach. My youngest always has his/her own shelves. I also try to keep things that are particularly dumpable up on the higher shelves or on the table. I haven't ever had the super-active-climbing-everything-in-sight type of toddlers (YET!) so it has worked out. Occasionally my daughter will ask to work with something that is really more for the older boys and I will get it out and start to present it and she will decide pretty quickly that it is not for her and lose interest and go back to her shelf. I also try to train them with the "one thing out at a time" rule, which helps somewhat, although I often end up with a floor covered with counting bears, lacing beads and puzzle pieces at the end of a school session. So far my 11-month old is doing ok in the learning room, I'm actually surprised how little he has dumped- he mostly goes for the colored pencils and chews on them! I am considering a baby gate though- with his activities on one side and the rest of us on the other!
That is how it works for us, I'm sure each family needs to find their own solutions!

Thank you ladies! I like the idea of doing presentations in the afternoon. I guess once we jump in to things (next week) we'll just figure out what works well for us. I have no idea what that is and everytime I read someone else's blog with their lesson plans (sorry Andrea!!) I have to fight the temptation to feel woefully inadequate with my sparse plans for starting up. Surely, however, eternity doesn't ride on our Kindergarten year!?!?!

I am right there with you about feeling inadequate when I look at other's plans on their blogs or even talking with homeschool moms in my local support group. It really is a temptation to be guarded against! It is a funny thing b/c mostly I love the ideas and inspiration I get from others, but every once in awhile I succumb to the temptation to compare
I hope your first week goes well and you get a feel for what will work! I always feel like I am learning right along with my kids.
