Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just ordered a set of 35 geometric insets from "montessorideals" on eBay, for $40 (we'll see about the quality when it arrives!). It wasn't that much of a savings over buying the complete set with the cabinet -- which was shockingly inexpensive -- but we're trying to buy as little as possible that's made in China, especially after learning about the deforestation issues. Since the cabinet doesn't have to be made very precisely, I'm thinking it's something we can do ourselves.

My plan for the geometry cabinet, and for any other cabinets we might need, is to buy a stack of sturdy, matching trays that are the right size (probably something like cafeteria trays), then make a simple frame by adding shelf runners to the inside of a box. The box would be made from corrugated cardboard, painted or papered to look presentable.

If anyone has done something like this, I'd appreciate it if you could share your experience.

Also, whether you've made or purchased your cabinet, I'd appreciate any advice about the size of the trays (or the size of the geometric insets, maps, etc.).

Sounds like a great idea, Eleanor!

Okay, I just found the dimensions for the map cabinet trays that are sold by Albanesi. (I think these are made by Gonzagareddi.)

They're 60 cm x 46 cm x 2.5 cm

which converts, roughly, to: 24" x 18" x 1"

Since the trays I'm looking at buying have a pretty substantial lip, I'd still appreciate learning exactly how big the maps themselves are.

I have wondered too about whether the puzzles and maps were a standard size at all the online stores. I'd like to hear what everyone has to say about these measurements.

Our puzzle maps are from Kid Advance. Here are the dimensions:

17 3/4" H   (44.5 cm)
22 5/8" W   (57 1/4 cm)

Opening for the maps in the cabinet:

22 3/4" (57 3/4 cm) Wide Opening with a 5/16" lip on each side.
