Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, I am certainly guilty of putting up random, cheap posters in our school room! Where is a good source for beautiful artwork that will appeal to children? I am going to check out our local Christian bookstore this afternoon, but if you have any suggestions, please post. Thanks!

I'm going to be purchasing this Nellie Edwards print that Alice shared at Cottage Blessings. I was just so moved by it and want it to be in our school room every day. Not sure that it's Montessori, but I just love it.

Oh Cindy, I LOVED that one too!!

We do various things for displaying art, for one I like to have a screen saver or slideshow going on my laptop for which ever artist we are interested in at the moment. I'm famous for buying last year's art print calendars and framing them for our walls

Some art sites I visit often for inspiration are:

Metropolian Museum of Art
National Gallery of Art
Winslow Homer site

Those are just a few to get you started. Also, if you google the artists name or image, you'll get LOTS!!

Blessings!

Montessori really wanted a print of the Madonna of the Chair, by Raphael, in all her schools. I'm sure you can find this....

I went to A LOT of trouble when we were in Italy to get a copy of this and my son (3 at the time) hated it!! He begged me not to put it up. (And honestly, I don't ike the fat baroque Jesus much either....)

So, what's my point? I guess I'm just saying make sure you and your kids LOVE whatever you buy!!!

My personal favorite is Vermeer bc. he is so contemplative....

How about Jessie Wilcox Smith? I love her sweet pictures of children. I just bought two for my daughter's room.
Here is a gallery of her artworks that I found.

I've had my eye on this Good Shepherd Icon
for awhile. I also found a great Van Goh print at a garage sale! I printed my own copy of the Madonna of the Chair.

Those are SO beautiful! I'd love to have about a dozen of them!

There is just something so beautiful to me in seeing origional artworks. I love to walk into someone's home and see an artist's work, even a family member's painting or drawing framed on the wall. That said, my walls are mostly bare!

One of my dreams is to buy some art from artists that I know or have seen their work at shows. Do you want to see? Here is a good friend's work. Another of my very favorite works are these.   I just remembered another favorite place. I often will feel uplifted just looking at these images online, but I really want some origionals in my home!!! I also think it would be good for the home environment for the whole family. Some day. Visiting galleries or museums with good art, and seeing good art shows is also a wonderul, inspiring experience. It would be even more nurishing to live with it in our homes.

Thank you so much - all of these suggestions are beautiful! I haven't bought anything yet, but I'm enjoying clicking around and browsing.

A subject dear to my heart!!!

We have a combination of art...some original pieces that we've purchased over the years, but mostly work that the children have done themselves, all beautifully matted and framed. I think this really sends the message that we are all artists and that "child-created art" isn't relegated to the fridge or bedroom door.

I let my daughters loose with watercolours and high-quality watercolour paper when they were under 2. The results are among the most beautiful, ethereal, abstract pieces we have in our home. A lot of visitors have no idea that they were done by the girls until they comment on them. I can't tell you how proud that makes my daughters! Other works get turned into bookmarks or the covers of mini photo albums.

We also stock up on canvases when they're on sale. The girls love working in acrylics that are then ready to hang. My husband has also taught them how to use the paint program on his laptop...those can actually be printed onto canvas, or just taken to a photo shop and bound into little books.

We also follow up trips to the Art Institute or other museums/galleries with the girls being given the opportunity to choose a couple of prints of their favourite paintings/sculptures/pieces to put wherever they choose.

It makes me so happy just looking around our home and having such a visible record of happy times we've spent together.

Bumping this old topic up. I didn't see this answered.

I just finished reading Real Learning, where it says there are cheap prints (11 x 14) available from the NGA. I can't find them either. I appreciate Elizabeth Foss's suggestion that using a larger print v. a postcard is better to see the detail more clearly.

Anyone know of a source for affordable 11x14 prints, if NGA is no longer carrying them?

Allegiance Mom~

Here is a past thread that answers the question and gives some other helpful links:
finding prints

Here are a couple threads since then:
Art Prints
Ordering from the Nat'l Gallery of Art
