Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a list of things I am asking a carpenter in the family to make, and I wondered how difficult these would be to do. I'm guessing that all it would be are the dowels cut down to size, and then holes drilled into a piece of wood to match the size of the cylinders--right?

Anyone tried to make these? Or is this a real longshot??

In the "Montessori on a Budget" book, there are directions for making these. I think I remember that it did say, though, that once you've seen the real thing, you might not be happy with homemade. When I look at the set I got yesterday and the sizing work that went into it, and how the holes are perfectly matched to size to fit the knobs, etc... I have to say that the price I paid seems like a bargain. And I am very DYI and believe you can make *anything* given the will to do it. This is one item that I am glad I just paid for.

Did you mean the knobbed cylinders? The knobless ones don't fit into holes in a block. They're just a set of painted wooden cylinders that are stored in a box, and the children can line them up by size.

"Montessori on a Limited Budget" says that although it's technically very easy to make the knobless cylinders, it's difficult to find dowels in enough different diameters to make it work. This is especially true if you're buying the knobbed cylinders, and you want the two sets to match.

Actually, every Montessori classroom I've ever been in uses the knobless ones with the cylinder blocks, as an extension after the child has mastered the knobbed ones. Is this wrong? It would seem too cruel to make them the exact same size and then not use them this way =)

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the knobless cylinders won't fit into the blocks -- just that they don't come with blocks.   If you were going to all the trouble of making the knobless cylinders and the blocks, it would make sense to make a set of knobbed cylinders as well... then you'd be all set.

Given that my training was rather unorthodox, I won't venture a guess as to whether or not the children are "supposed" to put the knobless cylinders into the blocks. I sort of hope not, as they would be very hard to remove without dumping the whole thing out (which, as I understand it, is not encouraged). Even with the basic activity, I'm getting a bit tired of helping my children to stick toothpicks in the bottom of the blocks, to retrieve the inevitable stuck cylinders!

Well, I've turned in the order for making these, so we'll see how it turns out. I'll let you know how it goes.
