Ok, I have my Xyron 900 finally. (Got it for my birthday.) But I haven't gotten it out of the box yet. After reading about how everyone else is making zillions of 3 part cards, I have to ask:
Do most of you focus on stocking up with 3 part cards -- basically anything that looks interesting -- so you'll be able to pull out whatever you might need as the year goes on? Or have you decided what you want to have available, and then go about making or downloading the 3 part cards? Or a little of both?
Also, how much time do you spend on making these sorts of materials on a daily (or weekly) basis?

I don't know if my opinion counts since I haven't made any cards yet, but I'm am planning to make them as we need them. I think I would get overwhelmed if I tried to make everything now that I think we may use in the future. Plus, I can see myself making things that don't get used if I try to plan too far ahead.

Those are great questions, Angel. Back when I was teaching, I worked the whole summer making every materials I might need during the year. Now that I'm home, I only get ready what I need for a month or two at a time. I just don't have the time to do more.
At the end of every month, I look at what I might need for the next month and make it. For instance, I have all the preschool nomenclature cards already made (picture, label, picture/label), but I don't have all the elementary versions (picture, label, definition). I'll be making those as the year progresses, based on what I need for each month.
Having a laminator at home makes it easier to do stuff when I need it, as opposed to ahead of time. =)

Now when you say "ALL" the preschool cards, would you be able to put that in a list form Or maybe give me an example of what ALL is I would SO appreciate the big picture here.
Angela, I have been making various and sundry cards all summer too. Most of them are directed towards what I want to have in my Continent boxes, Nature Centers, Science Related cards, etc, but I don't feel as though I'm going about it in a very organized fashion
I am very grateful to have finally received a template (thank you Donna Marie) If anyone wants it, just PM or email me and I'll send it your way!
Blessings!

Angela, when I first started doing this I downloaded and printed everything I could get my hands on, willy nilly. Everything was something I would need someday.
Well, that hasn't worked out so hot. . . . Think containers of cards never used, not to mention the time and materials invested.
Now I go through the manuals FIRST and prepare only that which I'll definitely need. This is working out much better!

When I say all the preschool nomenclature cards, I mean the botany (plant, flower, roots, leaf) and zoology (five vertebrates). Those are the main nomenclature cards I use with the preschool age.
I know this can depend on the child and situation, but I don't use parts of the volcano, river, earth, etc. with preschool just because there's so much more to be learned with those topics in elementary, and if they've done the work in preschool then they really aren't interested in elementary, even with the new component of definitions.

Lori, thanks so much for the info about preschool nomenclature cards. That sounds totally manageable.

It's funny, because I have many customers who teach 3-6 who buy tons of stuff that I consider to be elementary material. Now in many cases they have 6 year olds (sometimes who turn 6 right away, but too late to make the cutoff for first grade) and they need more challenging materials for them. So I understand that.
But if you can keep some of those materials for elementary, I think it's a good thing. Sometimes we use higher-level materials in preschool just for the shock value ("Your 5-year-old knows the parts of a mountain?!") but in many cases, the child hasn't actually internalized the work because the concepts were too sophisticated. Then they're not interested in studying it again when they're older.

I think this would qualify for the "Montessori quote of the week"

I think I might be able to handle making cards a month or so at a time. I'm really trying to prioritize my time right now, because my C-section is now scheduled and confirmed for Aug. 22. (It's so weird *planning* a birth like this.) And if I start doing anything without a plan... I find it incredibly hard to stay on track.
