Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Reading "Montessori in the Classroom", I noticed that the collage tray was a big part of the classroom. Are any of you setting up collage trays? What have you done so far?

Recently at Walmart in the fabric section, on a low shelf below the fabric displays, I saw a solar system set- all the styrofoam balls in the correct sizes, plus styrofoam rings for the planets that need them, plus the wires to put them all together in orbit around the sun. The price was $9.87, and at first I thought that was too high and passed them by. But ds is really interested in the solar system right now ( we got a deck of solar system cards from the dollar spot at Target). So then I thought: am I crazy? Do I have time to hunt down balls of all sizes and wires or make my own somehow? I bought the set. I'm not sure if it would work on a collage tray, but that reminded to write this post.

I love the idea of the collage tray- I will try to do simple ones cut out of construction paper, so for the solar system I would cut out circles to be the planets and put them on a tray. For landforms I am going to cut out the shapes of lakes, bays etc out of brown and blue construction paper. I will also make control collages. I also will have some more open ended trays with just various scraps of paper, beads, sequins, etc.

I meant to put out collage trays last year, but the most I ever got around to doing was putting together a few seasonal baskets: for instance, for Valentine's Day, I put together a basket containing cards, stickers, small tubes of red and silver glitter glue, and some themed die cuts. The kids didn't use the baskets too much, so I didn't put out very many of them.

But again, I would like to try to set up some collage trays this year, especially for my 4 and 8 yo. Right now we've been reading a ton of books about the ocean and sea animals; I have a book called Ocean Art (I'll try and link later) and was thinking of getting some ideas from it. I think one of the things that was lacking from my baskets were examples that I had already pre-made, and I do think this would make a difference. My problem is time management in this case.    (Also when I *do* sit down to make examples, my experience has been that the kids want to know what I'm doing and do whatever it is *right then*. This is really a good thing... but it usually means I don't get any samples of my own done because I am supervising all the little ones! )

I have been thinking about how to work time into my week for some scrapbooking (which I am sooo very far behind on!). After reading these posts, I had an idea that possibly it could work for us to bring out the collage tray and let my dgs work on that while I attempt to do some scrapbooking. A little quiet time for both of us!

I wondered about the collage trays too while reading Montessori in the Classroom, and I know they would really be a hit around here. I love all the ideas ya'll have written about!
