Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just received a small stack of sticker books I ordered so I can make the cute little picture and sound cards in Hainstock's pre-school book. But now I'm wondering if there is a standard size for making the cards. I was thinking of just using plain index cards but if I end up downloading other sets off the internet, are they going to be a different size? It may not matter but for storage purposes, I can see that it would be simpler if all are the same size. I like the idea of index card size because that's an easy size for matching with boxes and little file tabs.

Also, does anyone know of a blank template for making the cards that you could use in a word processing program?

Thanks so much!

Jordan

Okay, maybe I asked too soon. I just did some looking and it seems that there isn't a set size for the cards.

I'm still looking to find out if I can use an existing template to make my own cards.

All of our sets of matching cards are different sizes. I've even used 4 sizes of index cards (full size, and one cut in half) and used various sets of stickers. Same with 3-oart cards. The ones we've printed from the internet or made at home are all various sizes as well, based on how many pictures we're using and such. Usually, I just make a table on Microsoft Word, copy and paste pictures into it, add the titles, e-mail the whole thing to myself and print it off at a friend's house if it's to be in color. I suppose I could save the general template each time, but I haven't yet.

Catholic Mommy, thanks. I guess I thought it was harder to make the templates than it is. I'm an expert at screwing that type of thing up so I was looking for a short cut. (I have painful memories of making my wedding program and birth announcements in Microsoft Word and trying to line everything up.) Maybe it's easy enough to do that nobody figures to add a blank template online.

Now, don't I look silly.

I do have some blank templates- I think I got them from montessorimakers. I am no good at lining stuff up on Word either. I usually take an existing word document of cards and just change the pictures and words.

I did some messing around on dh's computer and figured out how to make the cards from scratch. I thought I'd share in case it will help any other Word-challenged people like myself.

Open a new documet and insert a table with 2 columns and 4 rows. Set the column width to 3.0"

Click inside one of the cells where you want to insert a picture. I found it helpful not to add any spaces inside the table until after I'd inserted my pictures.

To get my picture to fit, I found that resizing it 250 pixels wide fit well inside the 3.0" width of the cells. I suppose the height in pixels could vary though I just made mine a square.

After the picture was in place, I used the keyboard controls to add a little padding above and below the image. Then I put my text in the cells of rows 2 and 4. That was it.

Maybe someone else has a better way of doing it?

Thanks Jordan! I never ever would have figured that out!
I always used ones already made.
Meredith -I resize the picture to fit - I highlight the picture then go to the format menu, scroll down to "object" (which inexplicably is sometimes "picture") at the bottom, then a window pops up where you can resize. I do this after pasting or inserting (insert picture from file) a picture into the word doc. I'm sure that is clear as mud.
I may bravely try Jordan's directions! I have discovered you can make a "text box" which will put a border that you can resize around your words and picture or whatever- but I knew there was a better way!
I love making my own 3-part cards- I just finished sets for local butterflies and wildflowers using my own photos!

Sounds great! That sounds about what I've done. I also set my page margins to the widest they can be in the printable range (my computer will let me do .5" margins); some of my smaller cards I have 9 on a page - most are 4 on a page; but that's just my own preference (though it would be nice in some ways if all of our cards were a uniform size...) Oh, and I make sure each cell is centered, so that the nothing is too high/low or left/right.

Last year when I my dd was in a Montessori preschool, I was involved in making quite a few sets of 3 part nomenclature cards.

We used A4 (which is standard paper size here 8.5" x 12" - so an inch longer than US 'letter' paper). 4 cards with labels would fit nicely on each sheet, which made laminating and cutting easier and quicker.

It seems to be a nice size to handle and look at, and the words are then nice and large for dc to read.

Hope that helps.

Theresa and Jennifer - thank you for visiting my blog and your kind comments! I tried to reply via email but it didn't go through! If you (or anyone else reading this!) would like the directions/template for making the felt map that I got from one of themontessori yahoo groups awhile back (also includes many little pictures of animals/people/landmarks to mount of felt) or some files I have that are pictures of the continents colored in montessori colors ( I put these at the top of my animals of each continent card, they are useful for coding continent works) pm me and I will try to send them!

Andrea, I'd like those files!Esp the colored continent ones. They seem like they would come in handy for a lot of things.
I really like how you made the toob animal cards. Which toobs did you end up pulling from? I'm thinking of getting some and want to make sure I get some for each continent.
My email is just my username (lapazfarm) and then @ yahoo.com.
Thanks!

I'd love them too if you don't mind sharing Andrea!    My email is rjmack at ardmore dot net. I'd also love to know which toob animal sets you used. I've got a coupon to Michael's and I think I might head over there and continue building my toob collection.
