If I missed this, I apologize. One thing my sister talks about early reading through Montessori methods is the Language Objects. I've been eyeing the collection from Montessori Services (catalog has a whole collection of 83 objects). Montessori n Such's collection looks more plasticky.
BUT, perhaps you have a better source, or an EASY (stress on the ease) to compile some objects? What worked for you?

Jenn-
I'm eyeing the same set from Montessori Services. I've ordered from them several times and like them very much. You could find some wooden items around the house, but for the same reason you listed - time - the set from Montessori Services is more and more appealing.
While we're on the subject of language objects - anyone using the Farm set with the language/grammar materials? I am going to be doing this, but I haven't started looking for an affordable wooden farm set yet. I've seen one that is nice, but it's plastic - and I'd like to avoid that. Has anyone done this? If so, what pieces of the farm are absolutely necessary to provide enough objects for the parts of speech lessons. Also, has anyone already done the legwork on finding a nice, affordable substitute to the Montessori Farm?

Little objects: I set a couple of older children loose in my house to locate small items that begin with each letter of the alphabet. 8 year olds make the perfect scavengers! What letters I couldn't come up with, I either took small photographs of something (ie a little boy Xavier for the letter x), or was able to call a few friends with ideas. Getting the kids and family friends to help made it a great game - I almost want to do it again. Almost. :)
FARM: I've not used the farm as completely a Montessori style language lesson yet, but we will eventually. We've been compiling items as we go.
I have the Melissa and Doug fold and go barn which appears to be on sale right now.
We then have picked up various farm animals in plastic tubes when I see them for $4 or under. They're not plastic, but some type of rubbery material - I only get the ones with the animal's name cleared stamped on the underside (I also have animals for other habitats as well), but I'm picky.
I'm eyeing a farm house and a green house, but not one in particular yet. We have fence pieces from another animal set, and I copied someone else's idea to cut out a piece of blue felt for a pond. We also copied that same person's idea (I wish I could remember who it was - someone on here perhaps?) and covered a larger box in felt to store everything in as well as to use for scenery. We asked for a set of small metal farm vehicles for my son's birthday so we have those as well.
This way, we have a variety of animals (mostly females so I'm working on getting some males) in all numbers, and I write the words/sentences/phrases based on what we have.
I think that as of right now, the retail price of our entire set is well under $70, and not only can it be used for language, it's also just a great toy to have around for my little boy who LOVES animals.

Jenn, I have put together a box to go along with the Pink Language Cards and it has worked VERY nicely for my ds 5. Here is a link to my blog post and pictures:

I am also going to be putting together *Sound Objects* similar to this example at Primary Concepts In their catalog they show these objects being sorted into plastic cups with the alphabet letter on the front. This could easily be expanded to do middle sounds, ending sounds, double vowels,etc. I will probably use small baskets and our moveable alphabet!

and Jennifer, I am just starting to delve into the use of the montessori Farm as a language teaching method, need to research a little more as my new (pre)reader is doing pretty good with what we have so far and my older two are beyond the grammar symbols stage. I LOVE this Montessori Farm at Montessori-n-Such as it is fairly compact (foldable) and made of wood. (It might be a Melissa & Doug, but I'm not certain of this...)

Meredith and CatholicMommy - both of you linked me to the Melissa and Doug barn. It is nice, and I like that it's wooden. Thank you. I need to look into this as I have some definite activities that I want to use the barn with, but limited space for storage, and limited funds for purchase. The Melissa and Doug barn is a good fit on both accounts.
CatholicMommy - Your ideas came from JMJ Publishing. I recognized them immediately since I've been gleaning ideas from over there a lot in the last few days, and in particular on the Montessori Farm.
I have a dd10 who has a real *block* when it comes to the parts of speech. I figured I can use the presentations on her and for the 6yo too. Still looking though.

Ooooh! A quick search on Amazon yielded this wooden barn set -
inexpensive
wooden
has fence, silo, and other places besides barn only
comes with a few wooden animals
It's a little chunky, but it would be a *very* inexpensive compromise if anyone else is looking into this too.

Yes, that is exactly the one! I should write that down while I'm thinking about, because I do like to give credit for others' ideas.
The Melissa and Doug barn has seen lots of strong use in this household and holds up very very well. I like that it does open and close, so it's small for storage, but the kids can still put the animals inside - upstairs or downstairs - and my son LOVES the doors on it - some that swing, some that slide (I don't entirely get it). :)
Last thought: Here is an example of the type of animal tubes I've found at various locations (I don't buy unless I get them for under $4 - and they can be found!)

I looove the TOOB animals. (they have more than just animals btw...like Egyptian figures which I have used with this book...from the library no less! or Early Settlers..ideas are endless!)
You can get them from Michaels Craft store or even Our Father's house...I have used them on a world map before...still want to make some kind of felt or vinyl charts like these (btw this site is a great source of ideas for me ...in my spare time that is  )...

I LOVE those toob animals too! I have a ton of them- they have so much potential. So far I have used them as a matching activity- I made cards with pictures of the animals for my kids to match. We also use them for classification and sorting and of course object boxes. Thanks for sharing that Waseca website, I was just pondering how to make a land/water/air sorting actvity for the toob animals- I really like the idea of a mat. I have made a felt world map, and a vinyl classification chart (as well as labeled tupperware bins) for sorting them.
For the farm I use playmobils that we already had and put in a tackle box ala JMJ publishing.
I also have had my eye on the Montessori Services objects- I have some form M'n'such but they are not as nice. I think the montessori services set would get a lot of use, in addition to many various reading and spelling activities, you could use the objects for writing prompts (ie pick a handful of objects and tell a story about them), and "what's missing?" memory type games.

I love this site too!! I was thinking if not in felt, then why not foam poster board, painted and some felt applied for texture...just thinking!!

I wanted to use an old roller shade I have here...it is in good condition just won't work correctly anymore...so...I thought it would be great for this kind of application! I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I use the cut ends that we get from the store when they are cut to size to make a timeline! It is durable and my sharpie and those roller ends make a wonderful pair!
...and I do want to mention, I have so many ideas but have started them over a 5yr period and many of them are just seeing use lately. Yep, I clean house this way too...

Jenn, Oriental Trading Company has a small toy assortment that you could pick through. It's hit or miss, but those are the types of toys that are in the Montessori Services sets.
Just a thought.
