I have a question that shows my ignorance.
Is there a reason why wood is preferred or are any "natural" materials the idea?
I ask because i was thinking about play food and wanting to make these.
I'll make them anyway but am wondering if they "fit" the Montessori ideal.
Thanks!

The idea to use natural products is due to its inherent beauty so any natural resource will do. It's an ideal though.

Those are fantastic! If my dd didn't already have a stock of wooden food I would SO be making those! That is, if I could sew...

These are wonderful Michele!! I think they're perfect for a Montessori setting. We have wood, but I know all my dear children would play with these and would enjoy them just as much, maybe even more than the wood!! Perhaps a new sewing project in the wings

Angie you have no idea! I have only dabbled in Montessori until now but I keep feeling the draw. . .

Thank you all for your replies. I am definitely going to be making these. I thought too that they would be fun to make WITH the children and there's another question. . is it OK to make materials WITH the children or does that not work as well for some reason?
Thanks!

I make materials with my dc. It is something to do that keeps us together and often the discussion we have about the items/activity while creating it, is worth its weight in gold! If it's something that they CAN'T do, I'll do it in front of them while they work on something else.
Moira addressed this in one of the threads here while talking about her Home Catechesis Manuals. She encouraged it and said she makes materials with her dc. Other than that, I don't remember reading anything about this, but I haven't read that much Montessori.

I have had my older kids help make materials for the younger. They are ussually glad to help.
My dd (16) made all my pink cards for me. My ds (11) helped with the bead materials. My ds (16) helped cut the teen/tens boards and ds (11 ) helped make the number tiles. He also helped glue heads on apostles.
Many hands make the work light!
