Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've gotten lots of ideas for what to do with ds (22 mos.) once he hits the 3-6 age range, but not so much for what to do with him now. The only resource I've found is Montessori from the Start: The Child at Home, from Birth to Age Three. But this book seems pretty controversial, judging from the Amazon reviews, and I found it disappointing in that it talks a lot about what children this age are capable of doing, without giving a lot of practical help to the parents on how to teach them to do it.

Any suggestions?

Well I'm not Montessori trained, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt...

My two year old (and he liked this when he was 22 mo. old too) loves all "practical life" activities: sweep, use the dustpan, dust with feather duster, wash windows, wash table with a sponge, and then also clear the dishwasher.

I tried to do the bean pouring thing, but it always ends up in a nightmare (I have to admit, I was consoled when Rebecca had a cool picture on her blog of a Montessori nightmare that looked similar to mine )...So I think I'll bring that out again when he's older.

We do also do puzzles and I made a "set the table" tray for his little table which he can do pretty well. I also made a tray of things to open and close which he likes. I just looked around the house for small containers and put something interesting in them to make it worth his while.

Hi, I use montessori with my kids from birth. I got alot of ideas from the book Montessori from the Start- I was able to get it from the library. I also got ideas from looking at the table of contents for theNAMC toddler albums
I have also found the book Slow and Steady Get Me Ready helpful- it has an activity for each week from birth to 5.

Hello,

This is a great question. I find that so many of the preschool Montessori Materials are just not appropriate until children are about 3 years old. Check out this photo of what Rebecca's little Bella "created" with her Montessori materials: Still Life by Bella.

I am not a pure Montessorian, but I do think that some principles can be applied for Toddlers, but in a less structured way, and a more supervised way. Most toddlers will not be able to sit and work on a mat for an extended time unsupervised, but they may sit and work a manipulative if you sit with them. I find that they also love any kind of simple practicle life activities.

Meredith hosted a Carnival of Toddlers on her blog and there were many great ideas. I would definitely check out Angela's post for a glimpse of how she is providing many great practical life activities for her twin toddler boys.

I also posted this on my blog about some things that help keep my toddlers engaged in an activity for longer.

Ditto what Shawna and Maryan said We are working on this very thing right now with my just turned two yo. He will really only sit on a mat if I'm there with him, but he's making good progress and plenty of outdoor time for him is crucial!!
