Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello everyone,

My cousin, who is a senior in high school (Catholic schools all her life), has chosen to write her English research paper on the pros of homeschooling. She's asked to interview me and has asked if I have any good reference/research material for her. My mind is swimming with ideas, but I'm having trouble figuring out 1, where to start, and 2, how to not overwhelm her with my enthusiasm.
What would YOU recommend to her?

Thanks,
Christine

NHERI is a good start with the pros of homeschooling that are often tried to be made into negatives.. like the lack of "socialization" their research shows that homeschoolers are better in social situations.. that sort of thing.

But the biggest pro for us here is the control over our schedule. We aren't juggling the inflexible school schedule and dh's inflexible work schedule, the kids aren't in school when dh is home more in winter and the kids aren't only home for a large block of time during dh's busiest work season.

The FREEDOM! :)

Freedom to take the extra, fun classes we want.
Freedom to go on field trips when we want and when places aren't crowded.
Freedom to travel when we want.

But, my #1 reason is spending these precious days together - I wouldn't trade that even if the very best school was next door!

If I remember correctly HSLDA did a big research project a few years ago that had all sorts of information--activities of homeschoolers, test scores, etc. I think it was done by Brian Ray.
ERIC, the education research clearinghouse, might also have some research--it would be good to have some back up from an organization NOT affiliated with homeschooling. I think it is governmental.
I also enjoy the flexibility. Dh works long hours and enjoys seeing the kids at 8 or 9 pm.
One of the other cool things is that fact that you know what your kid knows (or doesn't) and you have the time, in your day to work on and practice those things. No teacher with 30 kids to deal with can be as close to a student.
It's more efficient
Hope that helps...

the National Merit Scholarship Corporation lists the names of all the semifinalists by state, along with their school. There is a special code for homeschooled students, so they are listed as homeschooled. You could get a statistic of what percentage of the national merit semifinalists are homeschooled.
