Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure if my question should be here or in Book Club!

Anyways, at least a year ago, there was a thread about an author, a man, and his book which was basically amount how our public school system began, how it was modeled after the Germans, what sort of student it produces. He himself was a teacher in NY and tried very hard for his students not to become what he felt the school system produced.

I did actually read this book, but sadly, I can't recall author name or title and my dh wanted to recommend it to a friend of his.

If anyone has any ideas, and can help fill in my swiss cheese brain, I'd most appreciate it!

This is very interesting, indeed! I haven't read that one from Gatto, but I have read:A Different Kind of Teacher

... I think I'll take the time to read the thread, thanks for linking it Jodie!

I just did the same thing!

And it was very timely in this winter dreariness to contemplate once again those thoughts about what and why we do what we do.

Thanks for the link to that thread. I read it at the time, but have recently been reading John Holt and it has me doing a LOT of thinking about what I should and shouldn't do and why.
