Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i wanted to make this a poll, but i am not sure how to do that on this forum.

so, i will simply ask, Do you test?

(not standardized testing. i mean, like, "history tests" or "math tests" at the end of a section or unit.)

i guess actually it is a two part question - do you have to report grades and scores to your state/county/whatnot?

no to your first question.

yes to your second -- but not the "history tests" or "math tests" in your first. they want standardized test results at EOY -- either those or evaluations, etc. we opt for the test since it's only once a year and easiest for all of us.

No to both. We don't have to report or test so I don't.

We have to do yearly standardized tests, but we don't have to report the scores.

End of unit or section tests? NO -- I know by talking with them if they "got" it.

I started "testing" in about 4th to 5th with my ds. Only in math, really We use Singapore and I give him the placement test after each book. Last book, 3B, I tried to teach him how to "study." When we do a book, like LLATL or Winston Grammar, if there is a review or test we will probably do it. But, for the most part in our daily work we don't test or have to report grades to the school.
I do occasionally use a standardized test. Mostly for my own information. I did the CAT5 in 2nd grade-ish and at the end of 4th grade ds did the Iowa. I didn't report the CAT(we were in VA and I didn't have too-we conveniently moved ). I did use the composite score for the Iowa last year for the school paperwork to show "progress." I didn't want to have to pay for a portfolio review AND the test.
So, to answer your question we do not have to report grades to our superintendent. We CAN send standardized test scores OR have a certified teacher do a portfolio review for end of year progress.
I think it is all a bunch of hog-wash. I learned, by doing the Iowa, that I really know my kid and where he is as far as his learning. I will probably use testing(both standardized and in our daily work) more as he gets more independent(whenever that may happen )as I won't be as involved in his learning.

I didn't read the questions thoroughly. We DO test for math but that's it.

I don't "test" because I know whether or not the kids get it so it doesn't seem necessary. Thomas will be doing 5th Seton this year (first time) so he will have tests, but otherwise I wouldn't do it.

We don't do EOY testing ... that is, standardized testing ... because they don't record what I need to know. I would WANT to know if they love learning ... if they know how to find an answer to a question ... if they seek to know, love and serve God ... Standardized testing just shows me if they're good in math/english but not much else.

I don't have to report scores to the State ... so I don't worry about it.

I do an assessment at the start of a year so we can compare what he is learning. That just helps me feel confident of progress and have some "evidence" if we ever need it.

We are not required to test in IL.

Like Anne said, I plan to use the Singapore placement tests as a review test.

I'm still undecided about other standardized testing. I know they're about 2/3rds bunk and I don't want to be tempted to "teach to the test". Then again, I think my oldest daughter might benefit from the process learning how to take tests rather than having it sprung on her in high school.

We choose to do a year-end standardized test to fulfill Ohio's annual assessment requirement.

I don't do any other testing and didn't with my son when he was homeschooled (until mid-fifth grade).
