Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 20-month-old DS truly loves the various statues of Our Lady that we have around the house This is the good news. The bad news is that he cries inconsolably when I don't let him play with the statues.

Does anyone know of a child-safe plastic Mary or, better yet, a soft-sculpture-like Mary whom he could cuddle? I really want to encourage Luke's love for Our Lady....but I want to preserve my beautiful statues!!

If you're willing to spend the $$$, there is a whole line of soft dolls, Mary and saints here.

Otherwise, I let my kids settle their want to cuddle with the holy ones via their plush Nativity Set I picked up at a conference a while back. Here is one version available at catholicchild.com for $35.

Here's a Mary doll in a lower price range: Mary. I think there's also an Our Lady of Guadalupe, maybe others. We have the St. Therese doll for our 8 yo dd. She loves her!
God bless,
Angela

Oh, I like the ones you linked to, Angela. My son also loves to cuddle the Holy Family, but all he has are his Nativity finger puppets.

There are six in the range at present.

St Therese of the Little Flower
Mother Therese
Pope John Paul II
The Child Jesus
Our Lady of Guadalupe
Mary, Our Lady of Grace

They are hoping to make a St Bernadette very soon.

This company have had trouble with their manufacturers in the last year and their Mary, Our Lady of Grace newest batch are a little different from the rest in quality (this is my opinion) - I highly recommend the Our Lady of Guadalupe - she has gold stars on her aqua mantle and peachy dress with the black tie band around the waist - Our Lady of Guadalupe is she a beautiful image from Our Lady herself!

These are perfect for little children - 25cm's long and very cuddly.

I absolutely love the gorgeous dolls recommended here, but I wonder if you could easily make something--a handkerchief doll, perhaps, with a pretty blue mantle. It could be very simple and wouldn't take long to assemble.

I have never thought of it but it does sound like a wonderful idea - what appeals to me is that a child could chose their favourite image of Our Lady and enjoy making the clothes suitable to the image - it could get very art and crafty and detailed!

Ladies, thank youso much for your suggestions!!!!

I love the dolls.....even the pricey ones, though they are far beyond my budget

I think I'll try both approaches: buying the doll from Catholic Child for Easter, and making the handkerchief doll, too (I'll try to find a pattern on the Web...one for a sewing-impaired Mama like yours truly!)

I appreciate, as always, your helping me out with questions!

God bless...

Renee

Here is a simple one with very few materials required: Handkerchief Doll.

When my dd Agnes was about seven, she made one on her own without much sewing at all. As I recall, she stuffed the head (putting stuffing in the center of the handkerchief) and cinched it around the "neck" with ribbon, tied two "arms" on each side with ribbon, leaving the bottom to flow like a dress. A couple of button eyes, and a sweet smile drawn in permanent marker, and she was all set. If one were to add a pretty blue or even white veil to this type of doll, I think it would make a very sweet Blessed Mother, although I would probably draw or embroider the eyes rather than use buttons. (It makes me smile now to remember how Agnes used to carry that little creation around and loved showing everyone "her" doll!) A white pillowcase would work well for a larger doll.

We have two of the Mary dolls from Catholic Child that we got our girls for Christmas and they are wonderful! They are a perfect size for cuddling and for imaginitave play.
