Our realor is a lady whose dh is working towards his realtor license, so he helps out around his job/classes.
So far they seem really nice and helpfull. Until today.
Her husband ticked me off royal. Why do people feel a need to expect my dc to perform like monkeys at their command and to undermine parental authority?
He was "playing" with the kids. Kids who had been behaving fine and had been told to sit down and behave while we dealt with business. His "playing" was drilling them. Can you spell mirror? (btw, the 7 yr old got it right and he thought the kid spelled it wrong) And you add 4 + 4? Do you know who the first president was?
MY dh interupts his "game" and tells the kids to settle down and let us do our work. My dh is being far politer than I would like him to be. (He hates confrontation.) Then the realtor totally blows off my dh and says, "Oh they're all right. We're just playing a game, right guys?" and keeps on doing it!
I'm so steamed about this. My children are not monkeys that should have to perform like this. It's rude and it's ignorant.
What I would have liked to have said:
No, my kid didn't know who the first pres. was but he does know about the Summarians. And no, you do not spell mirror with an e. And no my 2 yr old can't add, but he loves his big brother's k'nex. And Ethan is not named after the furniture guy, you nit wit. Ethan Allen was an American revolutionary war hero. MY son is named after the Ethan in the old testament. And their father didn't ask you if what they were doing was okay with you. He told his children to stop and for you to get to work and would appreciate it if you didn't encourage them to discard/disobey him.
No, I didn't say anything. Not a word. I was polite and don't think they have any clue just how insulting and unprofessional it was. But I had to get this off my chest or explode.
How would you discuss this with your children? I know they probably don't get the adult undercurrent dynamics goign on in these situations, but they do need to understand that they should obey mom and dad regardless.
How would you have handled this? All I did was basicly grit and bear it. Not very effective. Am I the only hs-ing mom that gets highly annoyed by this?
Well, it's late and I have 2 more showings tomorrow that I have to get out of the house for. So I better head to bed. Thanks for letting me get that out rather than sleeping on it and waking up grumpy.

Martha,
You poor thing. I think I would take my kids on a surprise field trip the next time this guy shows up!

I remember clearly the days we were showing our house--sometimes 15 minutes to make the house look like a magazine and then get out of the door. All 14 of us, at the time, would mobilize to pick up, polish and vacuum--I wish I had recorded it. I'll never forget the time we all piled in the van and splurged on Wendy's, spilled water all over everything, and discovered the kids had chicken pox!
I don't remember those times as being bad, but building teamwork and precious memories, especially since 2 are out of the house now.
I think I could fill a barge with all of the inane baloney we have endured over the years. It's good to vent sometimes with people who understand. Then I remember some of my own inane comments and become so thankful of God's forgiveness and ask Him to cover for me!

Martha, I know the realtor/house selling journey of frustrations all too well. We've been living it for the past 6 months ourselves. We have a viewing in the morning, and I'm clueless as to how I'm going to get the house in order as we have previous plans for tonight. I'm always amazed that it somehow gets done. I'm sorry your realtor is a mule. Ours is another Catholic homeschooling mom, so that's kinda nice.
Sherry, when are you going to write your book? I'd be the first to order!

Thank you for your sweetness,Lisa. Funny you should mention that--my ds and I are working on a web idea around those lines. I would love to bless and encourage others--what would be most helpful to you, in other words, what types of questions do you have that need answers?
