My longest was my first about 8 hours from start to finish. My shortest was my sixth, about 3 hours from start to finish.
I'm starting to fixate on labor and birth stories.

Bridget,
My longest labor was my second, about 8 hours. My others were 3 hours or less, except #7 who was induced 3 weeks early because of the congenital condition he shared with his brother Aidan. Several of mine have been born before the doctor or midwife get there since I go right from irregular contractions into transition. My fifth was a C-section.
When's the little one due?

Well, I actually labor over a couple of weeks, I think. I can have a week or two of periods of heavy contractions, only for them to start. So when labor actually starts it is pretty fast.
My 1st was 6 hours. My 2nd, 4. Then came my third. I went in thinking I was in real labor and they kept me when they should have sent me home. After a several hours of on and off contractions, the doctor broke my water and Benjamin came not too long after that. It was 11 hours long! Boy, was I mad!
My 4th was about 2 hours. My 5th we induced and she was born in less than 3 hours. I don't think I needed the Pitocin. Finally, my 6th was also induced and took 4 hours. She was my only Epidural and it was a miserable labor. I decided no more inductions and absolutely no more Epidurals!
Bridget, isn't it a little early to be thinking labor?

I'm due September 8. This is early for me to start fixating on labor stories. But i'm so excited to be having another one!

My longest labor was with my oldest--about 22 hours or so. My shortest was with my youngest (5th child)--just 2 hours. It was a snowy January day in the early morning. It was all so fast that there was no time for me to get the epidural that I wanted so dearly. My wonderful doctor rushed to the hospital and arrived just in time to wash his hands and catch the baby!

My longest was an anomaly. My water broke at 3AM and dh was in New York. I had tiny little contractions until his plane landed at 7. From that time on, I had my classic 3 hour labor, very similar to most of the others.
My fastest was Nicholas, my sixth, 1 hour and 45 minutes from the time my water broke. It was about 45 minutes of contractions and only one push!

My longest labor was with my oldest, but was only 3 1/2 hours. My cervix dilates early so I have a head start. My shortest was with #5, and was ONE HOUR. That was a very hard hour.
I'm almost 44 and our youngest is 5 so I'm doubting I'll ever go through this again.
God bless,
Patty

Whoa, you guys have fast labors! I thought most babies took at least 12 hours.
My son was about 14 hours of hard work, but it went very well. My daughter was 22 hours of miserable, exhausting work , happily of course she was born great. It has been almost 4 years since I've had a baby go to 3rd trimester so I'm expecting another long labor. Perhaps I'll be surprised! You guys give me hope!

My longest labor was 8 hours. My shortest (fifth baby) was only about an hour and forty minutes. I woke with very irregular contractions. I wasn't even sure I was in labor until I had my "show" about an hour into the start of the contractions. I called the midwife, my friend who was to babysit, and began to get my things into the car. I had some unusually strong contractions for so "early" in labor and then my water broke. I went inside to change clothes. I had another gush, and there was no turning back.
I couldn't get up off the floor. My dh kept trying to get me to get up and get in the car as I was trying to convince him that this was "it." I kept asking him to call a lay midwife from our church (who had delivered our third) to come. He didn't want to bother her at 5:30 AM, however. Finally, at my insistence-between groans-he made the call.
My babysitter arrived, and while dh was explaining to her that we wouldn't make it to the hospital, I yelled to him that the baby was coming. (I was in our small downstairs bathroom-with the door closed as not to wake the children.) He took one look, grabbed some rubber gloves from the cabinet, and delivered the head. With a little shifting on the next contraction, our 9lb 5 oz boy was delivered by his dad.
Even though he is a vet, dh was a bit in shock the whole day. Our friend, the midwife, arrived in time to deliver the placenta. She cut the cord, cleaned us up, and we headed off to the hospital,(I was strep B positive) after surprising the children with their little brother.
He was actually my easiest to push out, and no tears!!
Very exciting!!!

I think as some mentioned I am actually in labor for a week or two ahead of time and then by the time I have "real" contractions a lot of the work is done. I sure am uncomfortable those last 10 or so days!!
Maureen, that was a great story!
my dh delivered my 6th! though not at home. We were already at the hospital and the dr had stepped out to chat with the nurses. DH shouted to her to come, but by the time she came back in Aidan's head was already out. So she instructed him how to grab the head and shoulders. Luckily it was his 6th and he'd seen the whole thing before, and he was already scrubbed and gowned!

I totally agree! My first started at 3pm, wasn't born until 2pm. For my second, I had contractions for two days every hour. The worst part of both my labors was that I dilated at 9cm for about 4-5 hours without any pain killers; Maybe I would learn my lesson for my next one.

My longest was my first, 26 hours. It was rough. My shortest was the last one. number five took about 5 hours.
I have never had my water break on its own. I have always wondered what that was like.

It's like having a balloon pop inside of you--complete with the noise! Very cool sensation....

My water has never broken on it's own either. Which makes it very foolish for me to be nervous about going places towards the end in case it happens. I'm always afraid it will be at church or the grocery store.

Elizabeth, I'm glad you said that. I've always heard that pop with the 4 that my water breaking proceeded labor. My dh always thought I was crazy to say that I heard it!
My longest labor was 36 hours, with #2, but she was my VBAC baby so I was on top of the world after her birth!
My shortest was 3 hours. I've had 2 c-sections out of the ten births.

Bridget, I've always had the same fears! I've only had my water break on it's own once -- with the last one. It happened while I was asleep, so I really thought that I had just wet the bed!
Shortest labor: 1 hr 45 min. (with #2) I was at 8cm and still wouldn't go into labor. I went to the hospital with contractions that stopped once I was hydrated. The doctor wouldn't let me leave, though! In the end they gave me pitocin.
Longest labor: don't know. I had small contractions for a couple of hours, I think, before realizing I was in labor (with #3). In the end, I think the labor was about 7 hours.

Its hard to say because I'm always induced. I'm never sure when it starts! All babies so far 2 weeks late.
#1- Sent to hospital from Dr. office because of stress test results. Spent night in hospital broke water at 2am because of fetal distress, got pitocin had baby at 3pm after 3 hours of pushing.
#2 Started pitocin Tuesday morning- Wednesday afternoon Dr checks me at 2pm says it will be hours still- son born at 3pm with one nurse screaming at me not to push.
#3 Started pitocin at 6am boy #3 born at 5pm. Minimal pushing- maybe 15-20 minutes.
#4 Started pitocin at 6 am #1 girl born at 6:30pm. Same amount of pushing as number #3.
I'm pretty sure I have less than 5 hours of labor generally. I'm hoping that maybe this time I'll go into labor on my own, but my track record doesn't look good.
