Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest son will be 12 soon, which is the legal age in our state to be home alone, or babysit. I think it would go well for short periods of time.

Besides the obvious, assessing the child himself, do you have any specific criteria for deciding when to do this?   Any particular training you do with the child first? Any tips for what to do or not do?

Our biggest consideration in letting the children "baby sit" themselves is how well they obey the oldest child's instructions. I think they are getting close, with the two oldest acting as a team to keep the others in line.

The aspect we have been honing is Self control and responsibility. I have been strongly promoting the strengths of knighthood/gentlemanliness for the boys. Their job is to protect their sisters and brothers. They are to be soldiers in Christ's army and stand for what is right and good. Like the good guys that stood against the evil forces in Lord of the Rings, and the Narnia Chronicles, they too must stand firm against temptation.

This has helped a great deal and improved sibling relationships.

Regards

David
