Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So how do you handle it when your kid's say they are too sick to do school? I don't mind letting them rest when they are really sick but sometimes it is hard to tell. I hate getting behind because many subjects are shared by all and not everyone is "sick".   Any ideas?

Too sick to read or hold a pencil means they are staying in bed away from everyone else.

Healthy enough to play or be cranky abiut resting = at least capable of a light school work day.

Martha's rule sounds like mine. I take things like fevers and general "need to sleep" behaviors into account, because those are hard to fake! My line, when someone says they don't feel well, is "Let's just see how you do." I give them some light schoolwork to start, and watch their progress. The kid who seriously falls asleep, or has to get up and run to the bathroom -- that kid gets a pass. The kid who does it listlessly doesn't get piled up with work, but does read or do other quiet, light, lying-down kinds of things that I count as part of a school day. If they just feel "off," they can at least lie on the couch and read, or listen to an audiobook, or watch some good documentary or something.

Very few days in our house are out-and-out sick days, when nothing gets done . . .
