Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My sister-in-law has a home based business and has asked me if I would be interested in watching her two girls, ages 4 and 15 months, for 6-8 hours one day a week.

She has no idea what to pay me, and I have no idea what to charge her.

Thoughts?

Mu girls usually get around $5 per hour babysitting. Daycare though will typically be less per hour but be per child. So 2 kids will still be around $4-5 per hour. So something in the neighborhood of $40 would be in that ballpark.

Rates are probably location specific as well. My daughter gets between $6-10/hour (average being $8). That seems to be a standard rate around here.

I am a little surprised to hear these rates since back when I was working and school was closed for a holiday, we would pay one of the teachers $100 to watch DD for the day. We also paid about $50 to a babysitter when DH and I had a rare evening out.

Here's a link to a chart from Sittercity with sample rates for babysitters by metro area. Babysitting Rates

You're lucky with those rates! We were paying $15-20/hr. for our boys. We needed adult caregivers for our middle son who is bipolar and on the autistic spectrum.

Just thought of this: if you are homeschooling your kids and adding her children to the mix, I would think you should charge her more. It will more completed including them in your school day than if you were "just" babysitting while caring for your own children. For that I would see what the going rate is for preschool/child care because you will be providing care along with an "educational" program as they do in preschool.

Yep,rural and depressed economy (and has been for a while) people aren't making much more than minimum wage in many cases so they can't pay that much.

One of my friends was a nanny and the current going rate was $5/hour/per kid. Your SIL's kids are fairly young too, so I wouldn't under sell yourself.   Especially if you will need to feed them, put them down for naps and/or drive them places.

Also, I have seen this happen to many times when you try to give someone a "deal" and then when it because a bigger burden than you though and the money seems too little you can get resentful. You certainly don't want that to happen with family.

ETA: I should also mention for my friend she didn't pay for any of the food for the kids she was taking care of or the activities, that was provided by the parents. She also got health insurance and bonus. :)

In my area the rate for a younger babysitter versus an adult babysitter is quite different. An adult gets paid a higher fee.

I don't know what the going rate is...all I know is that it's expensive with just two kids!

This is a great point, Betsy! I have seen this happen also.

We recently found some traditional Catholic homeschooled teenage girls that live ten minutes away and only charge $10/hour to watch all six of our young children. Answered prayer? YES!! When I was young, I chraged $10-20/hour and had lots of takers. We're in a high income area, though. But yes, adults/mothers should expect to get paid more than teens.
