Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Next week I will be hosting two workshops on homeschooling with toddlers. I have plenty of ideas, lists of them actually. I am using an idea from the SCM website of making small boxes/kits for an older student to take and do with the toddler(s) while mom is schooling another child. Not a new idea, I'm sure, but where when I read about it there finally stuck for me. The plan is to have each mom leave with 10 completed boxes along with copies of the lists I have to make more at home if desired. Easy. And, really the only way to ensure I'll do them for my own family which is a little sad but true.

So, along with the practical, I thought I would include a bit of inspiration for these moms.

I appreciate the wisdom here so very much and I'm sorry to appear so needy lately with these varied requests, but here is one more:

Do you have some encouraging words of wisdom about toddlers? One or two funny or sentimental sentences that I could share with my local group?

along with your boxes toddlers can be very UNcritical of begining readers. Love seeing an older child sit down and read with a toddler.

Jodie, you are so right. My two olders (ages 6 and 5) are fantastic at reading to my toddlers. Win-win: toddlers get extra read-aloud time, and new readers have an appreciative and enthusiastic audience for some extra practice.

Even more than that, though, I think one wonderful thing about having toddlers in the home is that they are a lesson in themselves. I always hear people tell mothers of newborns not to worry about schooling too much during their babymoon: "The baby is the lesson!" I think we can say the same about toddlers. Toddlers are at this wonderful age when everything is still new and interesting (much like a baby) but you can also see their distinct personality in all they do (like a child). My toddlers are constantly teaching me in the way they respond with wonder, inspiring me in the way they explore the world, humbling me in the way they are using their newfound individuality to overcome all obstacles in their path to learning! And learning those same lessons can be a real blessing to the older children in the home. Toddlers are so forgiving, affectionate, and they lack that self-consciousness the rest of us have...wonderful qualities. Those little blessings are what I try to remember when I am going crazy trying to read our school books over a 3yo in the midst of a tantrum, or a screaming 2yo, or a 1yo banging on her high chair--or all three at once!

By the way, any chance you can share your lists here, Erica? This sounds like just the kind of thing I need to set up for my household.

Thank you, Celeste. That was really beautiful.

I will share links tomorrow or the next day because I've got to get to bed. One great list came from a thread here and Kacky just linked to a post she made on her blog that also has great ideas. Another set of ideas came from Meredith's blog, Of Sweetness and Light.

I am excited to get these boxes/bags/activities set up for my toddlers.

Even though my toddlers are boys and they are *crazy* at times, I am enjoying them so much for all of the reasons you mentioned above, Celeste.

Jodie, great idea about the books. One could put a new book in one of the boxes each week. I love it. So simple.

Thank you!

One of the most frustrating parts of working with toddlers is that they seem to say, "No!" and, "Why?" all the time.

But...those two words are the words we want our teens and young adults to use, especially in peer pressure situations.
