Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am putting together a list of videos I am going to put on hold from the library or borrow from friends for when our next baby is born. I know I am going to need to use the TV during that adjustment time but I don't want to let them watch just anything. We prefer live action, older movies. Not necessarily overly educational but still promoting noble ideas and morals. Not opposed to modern movies if they are well made and meet the other criteria.

So what are your favorites?

Let's Go The Farm

Follow Mac Parker and the Besset family through 4 seasons on their dairy farm. My kids have loved this one for years. You really feel like you are right there on the farm. It's an hour show... lots of tractors, cows, mud, equipment- a great one for boys.

Our library had it- that is where we found it. I think you can also order it from Vermont Public television.

First to mind are family movies, mostly put out by the original Walt Disney

Cheaper By the Dozen (older version)
Yours, Mine and Ours (older version)
Ma & Pa Kettle (old B&W)
Swiss Family Robinson
Castaway Cowboy
Old Yeller
Pollyanna

I'll drag out the DVD collection and be back.

Pollyanna and Mary Poppins are two of my all-time favorites. So is The Sound of Music, but it seems to be a little slow for kids nowadays.

My kids love Liberty's Kids, which is a modern cartoon based on the time of the American Revolution.

My library carries a really nice selection of Scholastic Storybook Tresures and Beatrix Potter Collection. These are great when you don't want to put something on that is too long but just short enough for a quick break. The kids always enjoy these.

These are all exactly the types of movies I was looking for. Some of them we own allready and I'll be making lists of everything Netflix Canada and our library have.

I'd love more ideas so keep them coming!

~Captain's Courageous (with Spencer Tracey, Freddie Bartholomew, Lionel Barrymore, and Mickey Rooney, old black and white, and a family favorite)

~Young Tom Edison(with Mickey Rooney, B&W)

~Boys Town(Spencer Tracey and Mickey Rooney, B&W)

~The Bells of St. Marys(Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman? Not so much action, but still a family favorite, B&W)

~The Tin Star(if you like westerns, don't know your level of comfort with bad guys and shooting, etc.. There isn't too much bad guy stuff in this one really. It was actually very wholesome for a western. It's an old black and white, can't remember the actors, except Henry Fonda. Oh, right about at the beginning, the guy brings a dead body in covered by a sheet on a horse, so you might want to fast forward if any of your kids were watching with you. But the rest of the movie is actually very tame, the only thing that prevented us letting dss watch it was the bad guy, who likes to spout about how big and bad he is. )

~Johnny Tremain( I believe it's an old one by Disney, our son loves this one! We all enjoyed it, and it is very interesting to see played out the times surrounding the Boston Tea Party and the war for independence. One speech in particular is very inspiring.)

~We second Follow Me Boys, our kids loved it and troop around the house singing the song from it by the same name(it's very cute ).

~Our kids have enjoyed 2 of the Shirley Temple movies recently: Heidi and the Littlest Rebel, I can't comment on other ones as I haven't watched any others in recent times.

~The Song of Bernadette( I think the actress is Jennifer Jones, it's in B&W, the kids have enjoyed it).

~The Reluctant Saint

~Edison the Man(Spencer Tracey, B&W, one of Dh and Dss favorites)

~The Story of Alexander Graham Bell(with Don Ameche and Loretta Young, a family favorite)
