Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have been having trouble with our ds(7)in the area of answering questions, reciting the poetry he's memorized, reading aloud, etc. A few months ago we realized it was because he was feeling shy and embarrassed.
This morning we had another instance of it. He wouldn't recite the First Commandment (which he just memorized) for my dh. So, dh asked him "what's 5+5?" and ds(7) replies "10." What's the First Commandment? Ds(7) refuses to answer, turns away, hides face, etc. We let it go.

But then I started thinking. Why will he answer a math fact, a science question, a question about soccer, but not answer a question about the faith, recite a poem, read something aloud? Then it hit me. HE'S A BOY!. (You'd think I woulda noticed that at some point. ) All those things he's not shy about are concrete, factual, logical. All those other things are more "touchy-feely", less factual and concrete.

Now, I just have to figure out a way to help him get over his embarrassment at having feelings. It's really funny because he is very expressive about loving us, and is always hugging and loving on us. He's also extremely extroverted. I didn't really think he would have a problem like this.

Any suggestions?

Anita

P.S. My very funny dh suggested that in order to help said child get in touch with his feelings, he would make him watch "Terms of Endearment" and "Steel Magnolias" until he would recite the First Commandment.

I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions, but that is such an interesting observation! I'll have to keep that in mind with my boys :).

My son is the same way. He gets so embarassed telling Daddy what he learned, but will tell me without any issues. I can't even get him to say anything to DH or the grandparents. If anyone has an answer, I would love to hear it! That is such a good observation!
