Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A few hours ago my phone rang. It was "unknown" on the caller id, and I don't usually answer those, but for some reason I did.

"Is this LeeAnn?"
Yes
"Is your son, Dennis?"
Yes
"This is the Community Hospital. There has been an accident..."
Dennis is camping with the Boy Scouts in CO.
"Yes, ma'am. And there was an accident"

Well they were hiking down a steep canyon. The man behind him slipped and fell, knocking my son off the trail. He fell about 12 feet before catching himself. He has a dislocated shoulder, torn and pulled muscles across his shoulder and back. 3 broken fingers. A hair line fracture of his scapular. His face looks like "ground beef" (that is a quote from the attending dr) and a mild concussion. He was knocked unconscious for less than a minute, and was able to hike out of the park on his own, a 4 hour hike to reach the nearest exit point.

They are discharging him this evening and he is returning to their base camp. One of the scout masters is a dr and he is with Dennis. He assured me he will be ok and that they would take care of him.

Mommy instinct is to hop in the car and start the 18 hour drive. But he is 17 years old and with trusted adults and doesn't want me to come. So instead I am going to sit here and worry.

Oh, no ... I'm glad he is well and you picked up the phone. Praying for him and you tonight

With four boys and a dh who loves backpacking (and an ex scout himself), I often wonder about those calls when the boys are out on their own ...with out me ... many years from now (sigh)

Oh-
What an ordeal.... thanks be to God he will be all right.

If you don't drive out (and I agree it would be very hard not to), maybe you could overnight a care package for him of his favorite things... food, books,
pictures of the family, get well cards, something to make him laugh.

It would cost less than gas/hotels to send it fed-ex, but it is something you could *do* to make him, and yourself, feel better.

He is like an Indiana Jones with this big adventure. Praying!

Oh, I'd so have to be tied down not to go! Even with him being at 17. And the 18 hour drive. You are being so brave.
Many prayers for you and ds.

Praying for quick healing for your son and that he is coming home (to you) soon. Telephones ringing at odd times, caller ID saying unknown - so easy to not pick up the phone. I'm so glad you did!

Peace,
Nancy

So scary! Praying now for his continued healing and quick recovery. I will also pray for your mama'a heart--that would be so hard not to be with him.

Oh I'm so sorry! I have tears in my eyes thinking of you being brave not to go. It is too far.

When will he be able to come home? Melinda's overnight package idea sounds like it could make you feel better in the very least.

Can I ask how the man who slipped and fell and knocked down your son is doing?

You all will be in my prayers!!!

Oh, LeeAnn, I am so sorry. I'm glad he's going to be okay. We will be praying for both of you. That's so hard to be so far away from your "baby" at a time like this.

God Bless,

Anita

Poor mom! I am not liking this 'letting go' stuff!

My sister dated a football player in college. He and his brother both played on the team. They said that during televised games they could have lost a limb and still jumped right up so their mom, who would be watching, wouldn't worry.

I bet you are proud of him for being independent about it though.

Thank you so very much! We appreciate the prayers.

He is ... ok... The dr described him as technicolor with all the bruises. Very swollen and lots of bruising.

I was able to talk to him late last night, but now they are unreachable by phone for the next 2 days. He was very loopy from pain meds.

I am worried he will try to "tough it out" and do himself real damage. I talked to the dr with them and was very firm that they don't let him assure everyone that he's "okay" when obviously he is not. He is the crew chief and senior scout and I worry that he won't want to feel that he is a burden and will ignore the signs the he is hurt. They discharged him with prescription strength pain killers and anti inflamatory. I urged the dr to go easy on the pain killers so he wouldn't forget that he is injured.

They will be heading home on Saturday.

The man behind him is fine. He slipped a bit, but didn't even really fall down. He grabbed my son's pack to steady himself, and that is when my son was knocked off the trail.

Evidently the trail was very steep and very slippery. They hiked down on Monday and it started raining. They were unable to hike out and get my son to the hospital until Tuesday.
