How late do you let your young teenagers babysit until? Is it different for your own kids than a paid job out?
My oldest daughter will be 14 the end of May and I just wondered what others are doing!

We consider access to a responsible adult. My dd could baby sit late (no later than her fatigue/bedtime) at a neighbor's home down the street (where I have quick access) or at a friend's home where the parents would be close to home.
Love,

Haven't thought about it too much since most all her jobs are generally done by 10 PM. But a recent job was until midnight, but she felt okay with it and it was only a few blocks from our house. She is 15 1/2 now. Don't know if I would have been okay with that much earlier.

We'd be ok with later depending on the teens ability to stay awake. I'm not real comfortable with the idea of it being so late that she'd be falling asleep. So that will just depend on each individual. But nothing in our town is all that far though. The only time it's been real late she was babysitting siblings and we were only a couple blocks away at my sister's.

We live way out in the country and the closest job is three miles away. There really aren't any neighbors to rely on. She is almost 14 and I don't mind her babysitting until 10:30-11pm there. But she has another family that wants her to babysit until midnight and they live about 10miles or so away. They live on a dirt road way out and we don't know anyone around there so I want her done by 10:30. But that's not late enough for them so I think she's lost that job. The last time she babysit they said they'd have her home by 11. She was home at 12:15! They didn't even call her to tell her they were running late. They are a young family that goes to our church.

I'm glad you filled in some details, Katherine. We would consider that a job for a driving 16+ yo.
(It is surprising how sometimes parents who hire babysitters lose sight of the responsibility on the sitter involved, as well as their responsibility to not give a young sitter more responsibility than is fitting.)
Love,
